Italian brand Hausbrandt opened its first cafe in the Philippine at the Capitol Square, Escario Street, Cebu City. Hausbrandt has a presence in 70 countries worldwide and they plan to be a major player in the local coffee market. What sets Hausbrandt by Euro Food 1892 from their competitors is their way of brewing their coffee.  They are the only cafe that mainly uses the Bialetti Moka Pot to make delicious coffee.

Hausbrandt by 1892 Euro Food's Brew Your Own Coffee Experience

One of the unique things to do at Hausbrandt is to order their "brew your own coffee" or BYOC. The BYOC will enable coffee lovers to experience brewing coffee using the traditional Italian method. The Italians usually use a pot that they also call "la caffettiera" in making coffee.  At Hausbrandt by 1892 Euro Food, they use pots by Bialetti, the pioneer in making Italian Moka pots.  To date, there are over 330 million Bialetti la caffettieras that have been sold all over the world.

Brewing using a Bialetti la caffettiera is a joy to watch and you can really smell how good your coffee will be. The great aroma of coffee will spread across the room as the coffee slowly comes out on top of the pot.  It is a truly unique coffee experience.

Gustus, Gustus Resto, Sizzling Bulalo, Crispy Pata, Sisig, Shrimp in a bag, Restaurants in Tagbilaran, Best Restaurants in Bohol, Where to eat in Tagbilaran, Seas the Day Bohol Tour,

In my recent trip to Bohol, I went to Dumuluan Resort to learn kayaking. After hours of struggling in  a kayak, I wanted to have a belly-busting dinner.  Our host during our Seas the Day tour brought us to Gustus and it really satisfied the carnivore in me.  The trip to Gustus was another eye-opening experience about the vastly improving gastronomic options in Bohol.

When I am in Tagbilaran, I usually just eat in the mall, the hotel or a relative's place.  I never fully explored the food options in Bohol's capital.  My recent travel there showed me that Bohol is slowly becoming a good island for food trips. It is not just about peanut kisses, calamay, dinumugan, and river cruises anymore. Tagbilaran has a bustling restaurant and cafe scene and among the restaurants that you should try is Gustus Resto.

Gustus is located at M. Torralba Street, Tagbilaran City.  It is a restaurant that serves a lot of delicious  meat dishes which is really perfect for the carnivore in you. They also serve pasta and seafood dishes.

Sizzling Bulalo

I needed to replenish the calories that I spent in figuring out how to balance in a kayak. One of the obvious cures was the Sizzling Bulalo at Gustus.  A large serving is only at 399 pesos and it can be enough for a small group of friends. The meat was tender and the sauce was simply awesome.  I love putting the garlic and mushroom gravy on my rice. This dish also goes so well with some San Mig Lights.

Crispy Pata

Gustus serves the Filipino favorite Crispy Pata.  When I eat out with my family, we normally get Crispy Pata because one serving can feed many people.  If I eat with my family here, I would definitely order the Crispy Pata. It has crispy skin, succulent meat and it also priced at 399 pesos (Less than $10). I love eating the skin and the tendons, especially in the knuckle area.

Cajun Shrimp in a Bag

This dish reminded me of the Cebu restaurants that served shrimp in a bag like Choobi-Choobi and Bucket Shrimps.  I cannot resist shrimps and I enjoyed the cajun-flavored shrimps at Gustus. It was fragrant and the flavor profile was a bit interesting.

Fried Rice

Although I would have enjoyed the dishes as much with plain rice, I would like to give props to the delicious fried rice dishes that were served that night. I got to try the bagoong rice and the salted fried rice. Each rice platter would have a meal on its own owing to their delicious flavors and not too overpowering saltiness.  The rice could complement well their other dishes like sisig, gambas, gising-gising, and chicken wings.

Seafood Linguini

When I went there, I was with some friends who do not eat red meat.  One of the best options for them is to have the seafood linguini pasta.  They also have Shrimp Alfredo and Marinara pasta.

Other dishes that I tried

I also had their sisig and wings.  I enjoyed my time eating there and I would love to try their steak and Spanish dishes on my next visit.

Kalami Cebu Verdict

I would definitely go back to Gustus Resto when I swing by Tagbilaran.  The upside of this place is quite high and I am curious about their other dishes especially the rib-eye, ribs, lengua, callos, and caldereta.  I love Spanish dishes and I want to know if Gustus can be the best "Spanish" Resto in the island.  If you are a meat lover like me, I think you should check out Gustus when you are in Bohol! ;)

June 2016 was a busy month for Kalami Cebu. I posted fewer blog posts compared to other months but most of my content were on my social media accounts.  The main culprit for less output in the blog would definitely be my new camera, the Sony A6300.  I bought a new camera to help in my blogging and it worked but breaking in my new cam was a bit detrimental to my blogging.

Kalami Cebu, Food Blog, Cebu Food Blog, June 2016, Sony A6300, Selfie

The nicest thing about the A6300 is its video capabilities and it made me take a lot of videos last month.  It has been a while since I last edited some videos so producing one video normally takes hours for me. It was frustrating at times but eventually I got the hang of it. It has been a joy ride but I am still like a kid learning how to ride a bike.

Recently, I started shooting on 4k and sometimes 120 fps.  The A6300 shoots 4k videos and it can actually give some pretty cool slow motion clips. Most of my work are in my Kalami Cebu Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/kalamicebu/.  Please follow me if you want to see my latest short videos.

Kalami Cebu Highlights for June 2016

Here some of the highlights of the past month.  You can expect some blog posts about these "recent" events to be posted in the coming days.

3. Manila Trip - I had an overnight stay in Manila courtesy of PLDT Home and Smart Bro. I was one of the lucky people who witnessed a reunion of the Eraserheads during the launch of the new logos of Smart and PLDT.

July is expected to be another busy month for events and invites.  In fact, I just went to 3 events today.  It is gonna be doubly hard for me because of my backlog.  I am committed to producing more posts this month and I am shifting my POV to a more personal one.  I hope that you will like the new format of Kalami Cebu that will roll out in the coming days.

Keep eating!!! ;)

Dishes at Makan Ahooy

Lately, I have been concentrating on making videos for my Instagram account and Facebook page.  One of my videos recently got over 8,000 views without using ads and it was about this new food court that has opened in Salinas Drive named Makan Ahooy Food Kiosk.  This food court promises to give you some of the best eats at super affordable prices.  Check it out and tell me what you think about it.

It was not really my first time in Makan Ahooy, a week prior I went to check out this place and I only tried two stalls.  After eating at Cio's Street Food and Miga, I found the food court quite promising. I was pretty excited when blogger JL Mainit of Viajera Cebuana invited me to the launch of this new exciting food spot in Lahug.

Makan Ahooy is a concept of Chef Marc Cuizon.   He wanted to put up a place where Cebuanos can eat their favorite food at affordable prices.  He recruited some friends to put up stalls featuring different cuisines.  At Makan Ahooy, there is a place for lasagna, Korean food, shawarma, lutong bahay, and street food.  There are countless of possibilities for an awesome meal there.

What I like most about Makan Ahooy is the wide array of affordable choices for a meal.  I once went here with 300 pesos to try out a few dishes and I ended up having to take a lot of food home as I cannot finish it all. I am really happy that there is another good place for lunch or dinner in the area.  It is a no-frills food court and it reminded me of the times when I would go to Salinas Drive to eat ginabot and other ponko-pongko favorites (it was a long time ago).

Kalami Cebu's 7 recommended dishes at Makan Ahooy Food Kiosk:

I have not tried every dish available here but I was able to taste a lot during my first and second visits.  I am just going to list down some of the items that I will probably order again on my next #eatploration here.

Batchoy

Cio's Street Food, Batchoy
There are just days that I crave for some soup. Having a good bowl of batchoy is an affordable luxury during the rainy season. I like going to places like Carlo's Batchoy in Mandaue but I am quite lazy looking for a parking space. At least now, I have an alternative at Makan Ahooy as Cio's Street Food is offering Ilo-Ilo Batchoy in their stall. They use fresh noodles with a flavorful broth topped with some innards and chicharon. It is definitely "lami!". For those who like taking pictures, better shoot it quickly because the longer you wait, the saltier that batchoy becomes.

Lasagna

Lasagna at Lasagne Que
To be honest, I am not much of a pasta guy but when I eat out with female friends, they would normally get some pasta.  Good thing at Makan Ahooy Food Kiosk there is a dependable place for lasagna.  Lasagne Que is definitely a go-to stall for pasta lovers out there.  They probably have the most awesome lasagna in town peso for peso.

Ginabot

Ginabot at Mackies inside Makan Ahooy Food Kiosk
Ginabot and Salinas Drive used to be synonymous.  The street was a pongko pongko hub. I rarely see pongko pongko vendors in the street nowadays. Well, the legendary ginabot is also in Makan Ahooy Food Kiosk. At least here, you can eat on a proper table and chair plus you have more options here for your second dish than your regular pongko pongko stall.  You can buy ginabot and ngohiong at Mackies inside Makan Ahooy .

Bacolod Chicken Inasal

Bacolod Chicken Inasal
Chicken Barbecue just goes so well with puso.  Filipinos love chicken inasal so much that some chicken inasal places have become nationally-renowned "fast food" brands.  If you crave for some chicken barbecue and you do not have 100 pesos to pay the value meal at Mang Inasal then head down to Cio's Street Food and have a chicken inasal for only 45 pesos. Just buy some puso and drinks and you will have an amazing barbecue lunch for way less than 100 pesos.

Pork Steak

Saucy Pork Steak
If you feel, a little bit fancy then just order some pork steak at Zee's.  Chef Marc Cuizon pork steak boasts of the yummiest sauce that makes you order some extra cup of rice or two. It is the perfect dish for the guys and girls who just had a wicked workout.

Fried Dumplings and Balls

Assorted fried dumplings and balls
Makan Ahooy is not just about meals.  You can actually just go here with some friends and have snacks.  You can enjoy an afternoon of gossip over some tempura, squid balls, dumplings, and lobster balls.

Samgyeopsal

Samgyeopsal
Makan Ahooy Food Kiosk is probably the only place that you can enjoy Korean Samgyeopsal along with your "Bisaya" favorites.  Can you imagine eating samgyeopsal with dugo-dugo on the side? Well in Makan Ahooy, it is totally possible.  Miga is a great place for Korean dishes and those spicy dishes actually, goes well with some of the Filipino and Asian favorites offered in other stalls here.

Whether you a purist or an adventurous eater like me, there are just a lot of options at Makan Ahooy. I have not really fully explored the place and I will definitely add on to this list in the near future.  If you have dishes at Makan Ahooy that you think I should put on this list, feel free drop a comment.

Cafe Laguna 25th Anniversary Buffet for a Cause

Cafe Laguna has always been one of my favorite Filipino restaurants in Cebu.  When I dine at any of their restaurants, I know that it is going to be a feast.  Last year, I was in their 24th-anniversary buffet and I definitely had a heavy dose of #happytummy. On September 28, 2016, Cebu's longest running Filipino restaurant will treat Cebuanos to a grand buffet for only Php 499.00 ++.

Cafe Laguna 25th Anniversary Buffet

The Anniversary Buffet will feature the specialties that Cebuanos have grown to love all these years.  Their legendary Fresh Lumpiang Ubod will be there along with Dinuguan with Puto, Puto  Bumbong, Kansi ng Negros, Lechon Belly, and much more.  This is definitely the buffet that will satisfy all your Filipino food cravings.

The grand buffet is available at Cafe Laguna Ayala, Laguna Garden Cafe, Cafe Laguna, SM City Cebu, and Cafe Laguna SM Seaside Cebu on September 28, 2016.

Buffet for Cause

“Cafe Laguna will always be about family and community. To give back to its community is always at the heart of our brands,” quips Cafe Laguna founder and Chairman “Kitchen Queen” Julita Urbina.

The 25th Anniversary Buffet is not just about giving Cebuanos the best Filipino buffet available but it is also about helping the community.  Part of the proceeds of the Cafe Laguna's Anniversary Buffet will be donated to 3 charity institutions that are close to the hearts of the members of the Urbina clan.

The Soup Kitchen for the Visayas is a Cebu-based non-profit organization working together with other charities to provide nutrition activities in chosen areas and immediate medical support in relief operations.

The Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI), a non-stock, non-profit organization, founded in 1991 aims to provide support to families who have a child with Down Syndrome. The organization is composed of dedicated and committed parents including physicians with missions to initiate, develop, promote, encourage and support programs and projects concerning Down Syndrome.

Cebu Caritas, for decades, credibly provides support to communities and persons in need missions that constantly adhere to the core values of Christianity.

3 Good Reasons to Eat at Cafe Laguna on their 25th Anniversary

  1. Selection - When it comes to Filipino food, the Laguna Group is definitely one of the best in the country. You are going to enjoy the food that you love while growing up done in the proper way.  No experiments needed as they mastered how a Filipino dish should be cooked and served.  Fusion cuisine might be popular nowadays, but if you want the real deal you better line up early tomorrow.
  2. Price - At 499 pesos, the buffet is definitely worth it.  The group does not do this often and if they do serve a buffet, it is guaranteed to give the best buffets in town a run for their money.  If Cafe Laguna does a buffet regularly, most likely, many buffet restaurants will close down.
  3. Charity Aspect - You will end up with a full stomach eating at Cafe Laguna's 25th-anniversary buffet but the #goodvibes will not stop there.  By availing the special buffet, you are also in a way feeding a lot of people.  The Soup Kitchen for the Visayas was the first charity that served delicious hot food to Yolanda victims according to Chef Raki Urbina.  Diners can help this organization along with the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines and Cebu Caritas.
I hope to see you there at Cafe Laguna tomorrow!

Kalami Cebu, Septermber 2016, Top Food Drinks in Cebu, Cebu Food blog, Cebu restaurants

An awesome month has just passed and it was a hectic month for my tummy.  September is my birth month. I expected it to be busy and it really was.   I actually had a hard time picking the 32 best food and drink items of the month.   Why 32? Well, Cebu has a phone area code of 032 making that number somehow significant to Cebuanos and to Kalami Cebu.

Here are my Top 32 Food and Drink of September 2016:

Kalami Cebu, Septermber 2016, Top Food Drinks in Cebu, Cebu Food blog, Cebu restaurants

1. Yangnyum Chicken (Oppa Chicken)

When it comes to fried chicken, one of my favorites is the Korean-style fried chicken. Early in the month, I had a meeting with some students of USJ-R and we had the sweet and spicy chicken of Oppa Chicken. Oppa Chicken is located at the Terraces of Ayala Center Cebu.

2. Cheeseburger (FrontGate)

One of my preferred places to stay while waiting for my wife in Cebu Doctor's Hospital is the Baseline area.  The Baseline complex in Juana Osmena St. has a lot of food options. One of them is Frontgate Burgers. Flavor-wise, this place is a good alternative to Jollibee and McDonald's.

3. Ham and Cheese Sandwich at Keso

I have been spending a lot of time at The Greenery in Mabolo.  That place has so many options for meals. One day, I wanted to take a sandwich home and one of the best places for sandwiches is Keso.  You can never go wrong with bread that has grilled cheese and meat.

4. Pizza and Pasta at Patty Pie

This newly opened Pizza and Burger place in SM Seaside City Cebu will sure make pizza and burger lovers go crazy.  The restaurant concept is based on the owner's love for pizza and burgers.  This is also a very nice looking pizza/burger place that Instagrammers should check out.

5. Patty Pie's Molten Chocolate

It's really good.  An awesome dessert to share to cap a fine meal at Patty Pie. It's their version of the Molten Lava cake with ice cream and strawberries.   It's pure indulgence plus it costs less than 200 pesos.

6. Banana Pancakes at Camden Cafe

There is a new all-day breakfast place near Chong Hua Hospital.  I love to go to Camden Cafe to eat pancakes and drink some mimosas.   Their omelets are great as well.

7. Grilled Blue Marlin at Parr't Ebelle

When I crave for grilled fish, I usually go to this Karenderia near SM City Cebu.  Parr't Ebelle serves grilled fish and pork as well as tinuwa, nilarang, and kinilaw.  A wonderful place to have a Sutukil (Sugba-Tuwa-Kilaw) lunch.

8. Honey Bread at Tom N Toms Coffee

Well, South Korea's version of Starbuck's has finally opened a branch in Cebu.  Aside from coffee and tea, they serve some delicious baked creations to pair with their beverages.  Tom N Toms Coffee is located at The Greenery in Mabolo.

12. Hawaiian Pizza from S&R

The Cebu Blogging Community (CBC) held its first Blog Bites last September 10.  It was attended by the newest members of CBC and for snacks, we had S&R pizza's newest variant, the Hawaiian Pizza.  What I like about the pizza at S&R is its size as it can really feed a lot of people.

13. Asado and Intestines at Snow Sheen

For my birthday, I bought some pancit at Snow Sheen in the downtown area.  This Chinese restaurant is a favorite among my relatives while growing up.  Aside from pancit, I also ordered lumpia shanghai which is my wife's favorite dish of all time. While waiting for my take out, I let +Ramzy Magbitang and +Marie Imperial try the Asado and Intestines.

18.  Spicy Lechon Belly

Cebu's Original Lechon Belly is still unbeatable when it comes to this lechon variant.  I am even salivating by just looking at the photo. I recently had some spicy lechon belly during the FoodpandaPH #GoodFoodTour.  It was an amazing food tour and the lechon belly is definitely one of its highlights.

We ended up at Dimsum Break Parkmall in our Foodpanda Good Food Tour and I was still able to enjoy some steamed rice after having filling meals at Cebu's Original Lechon Belly and Kublai Khan. 26. Menudo at Cafe Laguna

Cafe Laguna recently celebrated their 25th anniversary.  One interesting tidbit that I learned is that the restaurant was built  starting with the often overlooked Menudo. According to owner Ms. Julita Urbina, the Menudo has been the favorite among the restaurant's loyal patrons way back when it was still a small eatery. I tried their Menudo and it was simply awesome. I would love to eat that dish every day of the week.

27. Tanduay Asian Rum on the Rocks

It has been a while since I drank rum on the rocks.  I recently tried Tanduay Asian Gold Rum on the rocks and it truly rocks. I like its spiciness and how it matches well to spicy food.  The finish was soothing.  It was truly an enjoyable rum on the rocks. This variant is for export only and it is even being sold in the United States.  It is now available in Cebu at Morals and Malice.    Check out the bars cocktails that feature Tanduay Asian Rum.  Drink moderately!

28. Sliders at the Weekend Pit Roast

A couple of weekends ago, there was a pop-up food stall featuring Chef Jan Rodriguez of Ila Puti and Chef Tim De la Cruz formerly of Pig and Palm.  The Weekend Pit Roast at The Greenery in Mabolo featured a pig roasted on a charcoal pit.  The succulent meat was then used for sliders and tacos. I really want to see more pop-ups like these in Cebu in the near future.

29. Affordable Japanese Food at Jo-Ed's Lutong Hapon

I love Japanese food but you just cannot have it every day because it is pretty expensive. Not in Jo-Ed's Lutong Hapon.  This restaurant in F. 30. Bopis at Tol's

I love innards although I will probably slow down on this food vice. When I saw a place near my house offering some Kapampangan offal dishes, I immediately ordered bopis and kilayin. I remember when I was still in college I order bopis because it was cheap and it will make me feel full easily because it makes me eat lots of rice. This time, I did not order so much rice but I was able to finish my bopis at Tol's.  Tol's is located near the entrance of Rainforest Park in F. Cabahug Street.

32. Jack Daniels laced Butter Beer at Sugbo Mercado

To cap a great birthday month, I went to Sugbo Mercado at IT Park to celebrate their first birthday.  Michael Karlo Lim of Sugbo Mercado gave me 500 pesos worth of vouchers and I went to a food adventure with my podcast friends. I capped the month with a cup of Jack Daniels Butter Beer.  I guess the Harry Potter fans have grown up as well. Check out Sugbo Mercado at IT Park, Cebu Business Park, and soon somewhere down south.

I am pretty sure I gained some pounds this month as well as another year to my age. September was joyful and I am looking forward to more happy memories for the rest of the "ber" months. Tanduay, Tanduay Asian Rum, Crafted to Perfection, Kenneth Cobonpue, Morals and Malice

I finally got to try the export version of my favorite local rum, Tanduay at Morals and Malice. I really like it and I am not surprised that world class Filipino designer Kenneth Cobonpue agreed to become its brand ambassador.

Tanduay Asian Rum comes to Cebu

Tanduay, Tanduay Asian Rum, Crafted to Perfection, Kenneth Cobonpue, Morals and Malice

Tanduay Asian Rum used to be available only in duty-free shops and overseas markets like the U.S.A.  It is now being introduced to the local market so that Filipinos can enjoy this award-winning rum.   The Tanduay Asian Rum comes in two variants: Gold and Silver.  I finally got to try it at Morals and Malice.  I had the Gold on the rocks. I like its spiciness and it really pairs well with spicy food which is very typical to our local pulutan.  It would sure go well with spicy sisig, spicy lechon belly, and kinilaw. This is the type of drink that you can really bring to the beaches of Mactan or Bantayan.

Tanduay, Tanduay Asian Rum, Crafted to Perfection, Kenneth Cobonpue, Morals and Malice

Morals and Malice also showed us how versatile the rum is by featuring it in their cocktails. I am pretty sure that the lady bloggers that I was with were happy with the cocktail creations.  If you want to try Tanduay Asian Gold Rum, you better check out Morals and Malice at the 2nd Level of the Tinder Box in Banilad.

Tanduay Asian Rum x Kenneth Cobonpue

Tanduay, Tanduay Asian Rum, Crafted to Perfection, Kenneth Cobonpue, Morals and Malice

Tanduay chose Cebuano Kenneth Cobonpue as the rum's new brand ambassador.   They chose Cobonpue because he is the epitome of Filipino Pride and he is a world-renowned talent.  In turn, Cobonpue intimated that it is not hard to endorse Tanduay because he will always support Filipino brands that will wave the Philippine flag in the global stage.

Kenneth Cobonpue designed the Tanduay Asian Rum emblem by incorporating ingenious Filipino elements to showcase the craftsmanship and resourcefulness of Filipinos.  This marks his trust to co-bear the story of Asian Rum as its newest ambassador for both sharing world-class qualities.

Tanduay Asian Rum's tagline is crafted to perfection. I seriously believe that they have a winner with the Asian Rum.  The rum has great flavor, addictive aroma, and a smooth finish which makes it a joy to drink straight up or as a cocktail base. I will have a more thorough review of the rum since I went home with a bottle of Tanduay Asian Rum Silver and I would love to have my friends try it as well.

Have you tried the Tanduay Asian Rum? Let me know what do you think about it by leaving some comments.

 Drink Moderately! ;)

Paluto-All-You-Can, Grand Convention Center, Isla Sugbu Seafood City, Seafood City, rock lobster, suahe, lapu-lapu, All you can eat restaurant, eat all you can seafood, seafood

A couple of days ago, I was invited by Seafood City for the launch of their #PalutoAllYouCan and I was totally blown away with the dozens of ways that they can bring you to seafood heaven. If you love seafood like me, then this the ultimate all you can eat promo for you.

Paluto-All-You-Can, Grand Convention Center, Isla Sugbu Seafood City, Seafood City, rock lobster, suahe, lapu-lapu, All you can eat restaurant, eat all you can seafood, seafood

Paluto-All-You-Can at Seafood City

What does #PalutoAllYouCan mean? Paluto means "to cook". All-you-can means unlimited. Combining the two, it simply means that the kitchen at Seafood City will cook as many seafood, meat or vegetables dishes for you until you say "No more! I am full!!" It is like an all you can eat buffet but this is not a buffet.

Unlike buffets were dishes are typically cooked way ahead of time, Seafood City's Paluto-All-You-Can gives the diners the power what ingredients to use and how should it be prepared. It is like Ala Carte in unlimited servings.

The Steps to a Super #PalutoAllYouCan Experience

Paluto-All-You-Can, Grand Convention Center, Isla Sugbu Seafood City, Seafood City, rock lobster, suahe, lapu-lapu, All you can eat restaurant, eat all you can seafood, seafood

Paluto-All-You-Can, Grand Convention Center, Isla Sugbu Seafood City, Seafood City, rock lobster, suahe, lapu-lapu, All you can eat restaurant, eat all you can seafood, seafood

Step 1. Pick an Ingredient. Here is the list of ingredients that you can have at the Paluto-All-You-Can:

Paluto All-You-Can
Boneless Bangus
Chicken Thigh
Chicken Wings
Egg
Guso
Katambak
King Fish
Kitong
Korean Oyster
Lambay
Lapu-Lapu
Live Lapu-Lapu
Live Pompano
Live Suahe
Maya-Maya
Mol-Mol
Octopus
Oyster
Pompano
Pork Barbecue
Pork Belly
Red Grouper
Rock Lobster
Salmon
Sea Mantis
Sole Fish
Squid
Stone Fish
Suahe
Tanigue
Tiger Prawn
Whole Chicken

Paluto All-You-Can (vegetables)
Asparagus
Broccoli
Carrots
Cauliflower
Eggplant
French Beans
Kaylan
Oyster Mushroom
Scallop Meat
Taiwan Pechay
Tanghochay / Polonchay
White Radish

This list is freaking long. Seafood City also has premium items for those who want something fancy.  These items are not part of the promo and it will be paid separately.  These are the premium items that are normally available there:

Premium
Bamboo Lobster
King Crab
Live Sea Mantis
Mud Crab
Red Suno
Tiger Lobster

Paluto-All-You-Can, Grand Convention Center, Isla Sugbu Seafood City, Seafood City, rock lobster, suahe, lapu-lapu, All you can eat restaurant, eat all you can seafood, seafood

This first step is actually just like going to the grocery and picking your ingredients.  Some of the ingredients are even alive like the live Lapu-Lapu (grouper) and suahe (shrimps).  You cannot go fresher than that.  I do not think there is an All-You-Can-Eat out there that has so many "live" options available.

Step 2. Pick the way you want your food to be cooked. You can have it grilled, fried, steamed, or sauteed. The restaurant has their recommendations but you can always dictate how do you want your food to come out.  The shrimps are delicious steamed while the Lapu-Lapu is great with a sweet and sour sauce. In the end, it is a matter of personal preference.  Isn't it amazing?

Paluto-All-You-Can, Grand Convention Center, Isla Sugbu Seafood City, Seafood City, rock lobster, suahe, lapu-lapu, All you can eat restaurant, eat all you can seafood, seafood

Step 3: Wait for your food to be served and prepare for an awesome meal.

Step 4: Feast.  Eat it all! No left-over, please. You should not waste good food. You will pay double if you have left overs.

Step 5: Pay. Do you know it is only 680  pesos ($14) per person only? Unlimited seafood at the price is honestly a bargain.  Seafood City is really giving the Cebuanos the best and freshest seafood at an unbelievable price.

Why I love Seafood Island's #PalutoAllYouCan

1. Freshness.  I have said it before, the selection at Seafood City can rival even the best supermarkets in Cebu.  They have live Lapu-Lapu, lobsters, shrimps, oysters, and even seaweeds. They are literally a seafood city.

2. Fresh from the kitchen dishes. You can see how your dishes are prepared because they have an open kitchen. Unlike the traditional All-You-Can-Eat Buffet, your dish is only prepared after you picked the ingredients. You are assured of a freshly cooked meal just the way you want it. Plus, you are actually the one deciding how your dish should be cooked.

3. Price. How much are the high-end buffet buffets in Cebu? 800 a person? Some hotels even charge over 1,500 pesos for an All-You-Can-Eat Buffet.  680 is really cheap for a seafood fiesta? Have you gone to the mall lately? How much is the kilo of fresh shrimps or Lapu-Lapu?

I do not have to write more reasons to eat there because the three reasons are compelling enough for anyone to at least give it a try as soon as possible.  The #PalutoAllYouCan promo ends on Oct. 31, 2016. I am pretty sure that they will raise prices next month because it is definitely worth more than 680 pesos for one lunch or dinner there.

#EveryDayMandaue, Bakasi, lato, Mandaue, Mandaue City Market, World Wide Photo Walk, WWPW2016, WWPWMandaue2016, Cebu food blog

Earlier this month, I joined the Worldwide Photo Walk organized by Driftstories.Com. I am not really into street photography but I just joined the photo walk for the potential fun factor and the rewarding meal that was promised for those who complete it. Well, I had a great time and I would probably join more photo walks in the future.  My photos made me realize that I am really more into taking food photos than people photos but the best compromise are the pictures with food and people.

Kalami Cebu at #WWPWMandaue2016

The Worldwide Photo Walk that I joined was held in Mandaue City. We went to the Mandaue Market to take photos of people with the theme #EverydayMandaue.  To be honest, it was quite a while since I really explored a wet market. Back in the day, I usually go to our town's market in Bohol every Saturday because it was the tabo or market day.   I used to sell pechay from our garden. I always look forward to Saturday because it was the only day that I will be assured to have beef for lunch. Joining the WWPW was like a trip down to memory lane.

Here are some of the photos that I took during our walk:

I used my Sony A6300 with a 35 mm lens to take this shots.  All photos are taken straight out of the camera with minor corrections using Photos app.

My Kind of Breakfast

When I was still living in Bohol, breakfast could consist of local delicacies like puto, balanghoy, and bud-bud. It was a pleasant sight seeing my favorite "painit" items being sold at the Mandaue market.  If we did not start late, I would probably have bought some puto maya and have some sikwate in a painitan.

Bakasi Baby
Bakasi or saltwater eel is a pretty popular aphrodisiac. Normally, foodies have go to Cordova to have a taste of these.  If you like to cook eel at home, you can buy it at the market.

Dried and Salted

Dried fish or buwad is really popular among Filipinos. I heard from friends and relatives living abroad that when they cook buwad, their neighbors usually complain. The market is the perfect place to buy some delicious dried fish. Buwad is perfect as a fried viand and also as a "subak" for your utan.

Lato or Sea Grape is one of my favorite seaweeds.  It is nutritious, cheap and fun to eat. Lato is best eaten like a salad with vinegar and tomatoes. Take care of your thyroid, eat some lato!

Early morning deals

I am pretty glad that a lot of Mandauehanons still go to the wet market to shop.  There are so many groceries and shopping malls already and I somehow fear that the next generation will never experience going to a wet market.

Of course, the king of Cebuano food, lechon will always be there. We can practically have lechon any day here in Cebu and that is one of the most awesome food facts about my island.

EverydayMandaue Breakfast of Champs

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. As late as 9 am, these guys enjoy a breakfast sipping soup and eating "pochero".  Indeed, beef soup is one the best ways to start a day!

Even in a photo walk, I remain true to food and eating. I would probably go to a wet market this week not for a photo walk but to shop because it is just different and I know that there will be a lot  of Kalami Cebu discoveries waiting to be revealed. I hope to see you in a market nearby! Buy local, and eat local!

A couple of months ago I have been raving about St. Mark Hotel's Rico's Lechon Buffet. I enjoy it so much because it was affordable and it featured many dishes that I loved eating growing up. My only beef was that the buffet was only available 3 times a week.  Well, my prayers have been answered as the hotel recently launched their Crispy Pata Buffet featuring Alejandro's Crispy Pata.  Last week, I brought my "Kalaminions" from the Cebu Blogging Community (CBC) to feast on  the latest All-You-Can-Eat Buffet sensation in Cebu.

Alejandro's Restaurant's version of the crispy pata has always been dubbed as the best in Cebu.  When I learned that St. Mark is featuring it in their lunch buffet, I wanted to go to Queens Road immediately.  After talking to their lovely GM +Gieselle Abinales, I was able to book a #MeetEatRepeat session with my Kalaminion buddies from CBC.  Kalaminions is the term I use for people who follow my Kalami Cebu blog and page.  I credit Janine Ella Anongos of http://wanderingella.com/ and Chanel Imperial of chanelmarie.com in helping me coin that term.

My 5 Favorite Dishes at St. Mark's Crispy Pata Buffet

Alejandro's Crispy Pata- I love crispy pata or anything crispy and salty. Well, when it comes to crispy pata, will you never go wrong with Alejandro's.  They are absolutely the best.  They are a restaurant built from Crispy Pata. The skin is so crispy, the meat is succulent and everything just tastes so good. Adjectives are not really enough, you better try it yourself.

Escabeche - It was a pleasant surprise to see this dish.  I do not think any other buffet would serve this simple but super yummy comfort food. It is basically fish fried to a crisp then bathed with a soy based sauce. It maybe the poor man's sweet and sour fish but it brings a lot of memories. I am sure many balikbayans would love this too.

Kaldereta - Their goat Caldereta has been a favorite since I had their Rico's Lechon Buffet. I am glad that it is available in the Alejandro's Crispy Pata buffet too. They just know how to make a tasty Caldereta. Kudos to the chef!

Kalamiminions, #MeetEatRepeat, St. Mark Hotel, Crispy Pata Buffet, Alejandro's Crispy Pata, Crispy Bata, Eat all You can Restaurant

Ginabot - This is the Cebuano's term for Chicharon Bulaklak (fried intestines).  I was happy to see some crunchy ginabot in the appetizer station. If I am going to have a beer drinking blowout, it might just bring my friends here because it is like having unlimited pulutan.

Halo Halo - Isn't it great to finish a meal with something cold and sweet? For me it is and St. Mark has some Halo-Halo to offer to people like me.  Aside from this pinoy favorite, the restaurant also serves Mango crepe and other desserts.

3 Awesome Reasons to try St. Mark's Crispy Pata Buffet

Crispy Pata all You Can!- A serving of crispy pata is around 200-400 pesos in restaurants all over the city. Well for only 348 pesos, you can have as much crispy pata as you want.  Crispy pata goes so well with beer and it is truly a great alternative to lechon. St. Mark picked Cebu's best Alejandro'sRestaurant as their supplier.  The crispy pata buffet is just a no-brainer if you are really hungry.

Cebuano Dishes
- During our visit, St. Mark Hotel served Kalderetang Kanding (Goat Caldereta), Escabeche, Tinolang Manok, Dilis (Fried Dried anchovies), Mangang Hilaw and more. The buffet highlights the cuisine that I have grown up loving.   It is really rare to find a buffet that puts Cebuano cuisine front and center.

Price - Php348 is less than $7. If you are a balikbayan and you want to binge on Filipino/Cebuano dishes then head down to Halo Restaurant at the 2nd Floor of the St. Mark Hotel in Queens Road adjacent to the Redemptorist Church.  Peso-for-Peso, this is one of the best buffets in town.

There are so many restaurants now in Cebu that is serving buffet. What I love about St. Mark Hotel is that they co-branded with some of Cebu's best suppliers of specialty food. They partnered with Rico's in their Lechon Buffet and now they are featuring Alejandro's in their Crispy Pata Buffet. It is like saying to us foodies that they always want to offer the best for us and the Kalaminions and I really appreciate it and St. Mark Hotel Crispy Pata Buffet definitely earned the Kalami Cebu Seal of Approval!

Kalaminions #MeetEatRepeat: Enjoying Cerbeso at Michel's Bistro

Kalaminions, #MeetEatRepeat, #hibsters, Michel's Bistro, Cerbeso, beer, Best place to drink beer in Cebu,

I like drinking beer. San Mig Lite, Red Horse, and Pale Pilsen are the typical beers that I drink.  I have tried foreign brands and craft beers as well.  Recently, I was able to try the new beer line-up offered by Michel's Bistro and I would say that they have beers that any beer lover should try.

Michel's Bistro is located in A.S. Fortuna, Mandaue City.  From the outside the restaurant looks pretty expensive. Michel's Bistro has sleek interiors and it gives out an upscale vibe. Looking around, I even felt that this place could even be a good date place.  The second floor is intimate while the ground floor is suitable for barkadas.

Michel's Cerbeso

How did I end up at Michel's Bistro? Well, I was invited to taste and check Michel's House Brew called Cerbeso through +Jiggy Jr. of Y101. I took some of Kalaminion buddies and fellow #hibsters to drink beer with me since I really do not like the idea of drinking beer alone.  Joining me were +Romeo Nicolas Bonsocan+Rea Alducente , and +Ramzy Magbitang.  We were hosted by Michel's very own Mr. Will Belda.

Kalaminions, #MeetEatRepeat, #hibsters, Michel's Bistro, Cerbeso, beer, Best place to drink beer in Cebu, Kalaminions, #MeetEatRepeat, #hibsters, Michel's Bistro, Cerbeso, beer, Best place to drink beer in Cebu,

We were able to taste the 3 variants of Cerbeso has 3 variants: dia, tarde, and noche.  Dia is the lightest among the 3.  This brew is their version of San Mig Light. The Dia is low in alcohol, it was easy to drink, and great with some citrus.  The tarde is their version of the Super Dry. It is crisp with moderate levels of alcohol and it has strong hints of coriander.  The noche is the strongest among the 3.  It has the highest alcohol level.  It has a dark color and it is most flavorful among the 3 variants.  I think women would love the noche but they have to drink moderately because its alcohol level is pretty high.  Rea and Romeo loved the dia while Ramzy was infatuated with the noche. I enjoyed noche the most as well.

The drinks went so well with the beer mates or "pulutan" that they served us. We feasted on nachos, hash browns, and sausages. One thing, I like about Michel's Bistro is that their prices were surprisingly lower than I imagined.

Kalaminions, #MeetEatRepeat, #hibsters, Michel's Bistro, Cerbeso, beer, Best place to drink beer in Cebu,

We downed several bottles of beer and we capped our Saturday Night out with some Apple Strudel topped with ice cream from FIC. We had an awesome time there and the group is planning to go back to Michel's Bistro to drink some beer and avail of their amazing 50% promo on food every afternoon.

If you are looking for a good place to dine and chill in the Mandaue/Banilad area, you better head down Michel's Bistro.

I did not know that I was starving until I tasted...Vigan.  For a couple of years, I have been food blogging and my food adventures revolved around my lovely island of Cebu.  Yes! Cebu has a lot of awesome places but my recent trip to Vigan made realize that our country has so much to offer to foodies all around the world.

Lessons From My Vigan Food Tour

A month ago my mom told me that she plans to go to Vigan and asked me to tag along. Of course, I said "Yes!". I heard a lot of good things about the Ilocos Region. My college roommate was from Ilocos Sur and my Ilocano friends are pretty proud of their cuisine. Just before I left for Vigan, I made a list of the things that I should eat there. The list was not so long.  I probably assumed that Vigan is just about Pinakbet, Bagnet, Longaniza, Igado, and Ilocos Empanada.  Boy, I was so wrong.

Kalami Cebu, Food Blog, Kalami Cebu goes to Vigan, Vigan, Ilocano Cuisine, Ilocos Emapanada, Bagnet, Vigan Longanisa, Poqui-Poqui, Sinanglao, Pinakbet, Bagnet Sisi

I discovered so many new dishes that any tourist should try while in Vigan. The ones on my list were really awesome but there were so many new things I have tasted that makes me salivate while writing this. Dishes like sinanglao, bagnet with KBL, poqui-poquidinoydoy, bagnet sisig, royal bibingka and borodibod are forever etched in my palate. The food was so different from I have been used to here in Cebu to the point that it made me want to explore the "legacy" dishes of my island.

I am so impressed that Ilocanos are into local food despite the onslaught of large fast food chains.  It provides a stark contrast to Cebu were many new restaurants open with Foreign themes.  The visit is indeed an eye and palate opener for me that I want to devote a big chunk of my blog to writing about "endangered dishes".

Kalami Cebu, Food Blog, Kalami Cebu goes to Vigan, Vigan, Ilocano Cuisine, Ilocos Emapanada, Bagnet, Vigan Longanisa, Poqui-Poqui, Sinanglao, Pinakbet, Bagnet Sisi

Endangered dishes are popular food items in the past that is slowly losing relevance and significance in the age of millennials. I want Cebuanos or in the larger scale Filipinos to celebrate the local culinary creations that have been part of our culture and society. In Cebu, I would probably start with pungko-pungko, ngohiong, balbacua, paklay, utan bisaya, dugo-dugo, and nilarang.  I also want people to know that Cebuano cuisine is not just about frying and grilling.

Before I press the reset button on Kalami Cebu, I will write an in-depth look at my favorite mouth-watering dishes from Ilocos Sur.   Check out this short video for a sneak peak of the food that I will be featuring on the blog in the next few weeks.

We do not usually go to a hotel restaurant to check out the local cuisine. There are some exceptions and one of them would be the Bistro Amarillo of Hotel Salcedo de Vigan. Bistro Amarillo puts the Ilocano cuisine front and center.  I tried several of their dishes and I came out enlightened.

I have been to many hotels and normally their restaurants are not the best places to start a local food adventure.   Typically, hotels offer a good selection of dishes from popular cuisines like American, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and even Indian.  Filipino ? Local?  It rarely happens. It probably happens on special days but not every day.  The most high-end hotels here in Cebu are not really into promoting local dishes except probably the Filipino buffet in Shangri-La or St. Mark Hotel's Buffet. Hotel restaurants are deemed very expensive by tourists which make it impractical for a "food trip".

Well, Bistro Amarillo is different. The highlight of their restaurant is the menu featuring local dishes that people of Vigan enjoy.  The list is quite long.  Fortunately, I got company when I went to Vigan that I was able to order many dishes that piqued my interest.

Boridibod (Php 158 or $3.25)

"Healthy green vegetables with sweet potatoes and grilled fish that the whole family would love"
It was my first time to encounter this dish.  I cannot even pronounce it properly at first. It is a nutritious mix of local veggies topped with bangus or milkfish.

Dinoydoy (Php 158 or $3.25)

"Mashed pumpkin with sliced bitter gourd topped with Vigan Bagnet. "
This is another dish that I never heard of but this is quite familiar because I have eaten several mashed "kalabasa" dishes.  It was my first time to eat "squashed squash" with ampalaya although the pair is in the popular pinakbet.

Poqui-Poqui (Php 128 or $2.64)

"Soft and tasteful mashed grilled eggplant sauteed with onion, tomato and scrambled eggs."
We always have tortang talong at home but poqui-poqui is just done differently.  The texture is different and it is like a hybrid of tortang talong and ensaladang talong.  In Cebu, Isidra Comfort Cantina is the only restaurant that serves this Ilocano creation.

Pinakbet (Php 168 or $3.46)

"World renowned Ilocano vegetable dish topped with Special Vigan Bagnet"
This dish is served all over the country but the Ilocano version is the original and the best.  The pinakbet was extra special because they topped it with some sinfully good bagnet.

Igado (Php 188 or $3.87)

"A popular Ilocano delicacy with fatty pork loin and pork liver cooked with red bell pepper and peas, in a salty-sour sauce"
I always get curious when there is a dish that involves innards like liver.  Igado is indeed an offal lover's favorite.

Grilled Vigan Longganisa (Php 178 or $3.66)

"Try the delicious taste of Vigan longganisa with Ilocano vinegar perfect for your taste"
Vigan's Longganisa is not as fatty as the Cebuano chorizo.  It is compact, lean and flavorful. It is best served on breakfast.... all-day breakfast, I mean.

Ilocano Cuisine, ilocano dishes, Bistro Amarillo, Hotel Salcedo de Vigan, Best Restaurants in Ilocos, Bagnet with KBL, Bagnet, Dinoydoy, poqui-poqui, igado, boridibod, vigan longganisa, Pinakbet,

Crispy Vigan Bagnet (Php 198 or $4.08)

"Deep fried large chunks of pork belly served with KBL, perfect for your taste!"
When it comes to crispy pork, I just usually put vinegar with soy sauce and chili pepper on it. Ilocanos use a different dip for it. They call it KBL. It is not the old dominant party called Kilusang Bagong Lipunan but it is made of Kamatis, Bagoong, and Lasona. Lasona is the purple-colored spring onions.  The combo just makes you order more rice.

Kalami Cebu Verdict

I declare my love for Ilocano cuisine.  I am impressed with the diversity of their cuisine.  They sure love pork like Cebuanos but they also have many dishes involving vegetables.  My mom is on a restrictive diet and she was able to enjoy many Ilocano dishes. Eating there made me crave for veggie dishes here in Cebu.  I am really on a look out now for "authentic" Visayan vegetable dishes. I know it's out there and I would seek it and feature those here in Kalami Cebu.

Bistro Amarillo definitely earns a Kalami Cebu "Seal of Approval" for its Ilocano dishes.  Can you imagine eating authentic local dishes at your hotel which is just a block away from Calle Crisologo? Add to that, the dishes are just priced less than  200 pesos each. This restaurant is highly recommended by this blog.

Kalaminions in Vigan

Last month, I went to Vigan  with my mom and my Godparents. It was my first time there and I was surprised that they were celebrating a major festival.  I was just intending to have an Ilocano food trip and the Raniag Vigan Twilight Festival just made it easier. Well, this week's Kalamions #MeetEatRepeat episode features the new friends that I met in Vigan and our Raniag food trip.

It was Day 2 of our Vigan tour and our group decided to have a Kalesa Tour all around the Heritage City of Vigan.  Our tour guide for that day was Tourism student Mark Reupta. Mark showed us around the different spots in Vigan. But this post is not about those beautiful places.  This is about the new Kalaminions that I met while having a vacation in one of the most beautiful cities in the Philippines.  I told Mark that I am a food blogger and I want to feature his city, province, and festival through food.

Mark Reupta, Edgar Dela Cruz, Vigan Tourism

During our tour, I ate tupig, drank bugnai wine, bought cornick, and feasted on Ilocano dishes at Lilong and Lilang's Restaurant at Hidden Garden as well as Cafe Leona.  I got along so well with my guide that I told him that we should hang out after the tour and join the flight of Sky Lanterns at Hardin de Caridad. Well, he said yes. I now have one Vigan Kalaminion converted. I wanted to find more.

Raniag Festival was actually created to remember the good times with our departed loved ones. It is like a week-long Halloween festival that features some street dancing and costume parade. In the first night that I was there, they were celebrating the World Costume Festival. It was one big cosplay event that included some floats. I think the organizers could twist this into one big cosplay festival and "trick" millennials from other regions to join the Raniag Vigan Twilight Festival.

Flight of the Sky Lanterns Vigan, Hardin de Caridad

So, let us go back to the flight of Sky Lanterns.  This activity was held at a cemetery. There was no entrance fee and you can buy sky lanterns at 100 pesos.  I never joined a sky lantern event before so everything was new to me. A lot of people were there.  There were many locals but also a bunch of tourists who were pretty excited to participate.  I basically went around with Mark to ask some people crazy questions.

UST Tourism Students with Mark ReuptaKalaminions at the Flight of the Sky Lanterns

The event was successful.  Sky lanterns lit up the Vigan sky and we were blessed with really good weather to think it was just days after Super Typhoon Lawin battered the region. After the event, I was walking around looking for people to interview. I found Rosalie, my next new Kalaminion snapping photos. Rosalie turned to be tourism student from University of Santo Tomas who was a part of a group that was doing their thesis about Raniag. Her groupmates were Faye, Janina, Fath, and Ro-an.  After interviewing them, I invited them to a Vigan Kalaminion #MeetEatRepeat and we did an impromptu food trip.

First Stop: Irene's Ilocos Empanadas

Kalaminions at Calle Crisologo during the Raniag Festival

We were in Calle Crisologo and we decided to eat the No.1 street food in the city, the Vigan Empanada. We were supposed to go CJ's but they ran out of empanadas.  We ended up at Irene's.  So, I made them my guest vloggers for Kalami Cebu. Check out their review of Irene's:

Last Stop: Hotel Luna

Cafes and dessert places are a big hit in Cebu and even metro Manila.  I was puzzled why Vigan has a few "sweet spots".  Maybe they just love salty stuff like me. After going up and down Calle Crisologo, we decided to go to Hotel Luna. It was past 10 pm and we were glad they were still open. Hotel Luna is one of the most popular hotels in the area and I think they are the only hotel in the Heritage Village that has a pool.

They are offering an assortment of sweet drinks and the Vigan Kalaminions ordered one each and once again I made them review what they ordered. So here is what think about the sweet concoctions from Chula Bar of Hotel Luna:

I was really surprised that our food trip somehow summoned the inner food critics in my newly-found Kalamionions but it was one heck of an exercise.  I would gladly do another #MeetEatRepeat episode with this bunch.   Having a food trip with fellow foodies that you just met was extremely fun and I would surely recommend this activity to any tourist.

If you are a foodie, one of the major factors to having an awesome food trip would definitely  be mobility.   If you have a car, you can drive to distant places like Carcar City to have a lechon and chicharon food trip. I just talked to my friends from BPI Family at Casa Verde and they have an awesome promo this weekend that will surely tempt any Cebuano foodie to buy a brand new car.

Casa Verde RamosWilbert Yu and the BPI Family AutoMadness team

I was invited by PR Works to join the BPI Family Auto Madness Meet and Greet with online influencers at Casa Verde in  Ramos.  Without any hesitation, I went there because for one, it has been a while since I last ate at Casa Verde Ramos and two, the car industry is very close to my heart. One of my first jobs was to sell cars and I wanted to get updated about the happenings in the automotive industry.

#BPIFamilyAutoMadness is always a major event for car salesmen and car buyers.  I witnessed last year how Cebuanos embrace the event and according to BPI's Wilbert Yu the loan approvals have been growing each year in double digits. There will be a #BPIFamilyAutoMadness until November 13 at Ayala Center Cebu and Abreeza Mall in Davao.

Benefits of Getting a BPI Auto loan during the #BPIFamilyAutoMadnessCebu

1.  Best Rates - BPI Family Madness is really a madness when it comes to rates.  The rock bottom rates will surely make you want to buy that new Civic, B-RV, Fortuner, Montero, etc. One of the country's leading banks is shaving at least 1% on their standard rates.

2.
Free Insurance - If you love freebies, BPI Family is giving FREE Insurance for the first year. You do not have to shell out the extra 20K and up for the insurance of your new car.

3.
More Choices - #BPIFamilyAutoMadnessCebu is turning Ayala Center Cebu into one big showroom where you can check out the new models of over 20 car brands including Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

4.
Convenient and Fast Loan Processing - BPI can make your new car purchase happen quickly.  Loan applications can be processed at the mall and approval will be fast especially if you bring your financial documents with you.

What are you waiting for? Head down to Ayala Center Cebu and scout for your new car!!!

It was really fun talking to our friends from BPI over some delicious offerings of Casa Verde like their famous ribs.  The good food and the amazing deal that the bank is offering made me think of going to an out of town road trip with a new car.

The possibilities for food trips here in Cebu are endless, here are some suggestions:

1. Carcar - Enjoy their lechon, chicharon, ampaw and many other goodies from this city.
2. Dumanjug or Catmon - For the seriously mouthwatering roasted chicken
3. North to Bogo - Delicacies trip and eat budbud kabog and pintos then possibly cross Bantayan.
4. SRP - Next weekend Subgo Mercado will open its SRP brand at Il Corso,
5. Argao - For Torta and Sikwate with a side trip to Simala.
Thanks to BPI Family, PR Works, and Casa Verde, I will probably go to a road trip very soon.

P.S. If you want to win exciting prizes during the #BPIFamilyAutoMadnessCebu then you should join their social media contest.  Post a pic on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter of you and your dream car at the event and include

Air Asia launches Cebu To Singapore Route

Last Thursday, I was with the cool guys and girls of Philippines Air Asia and they just informed us that starting November 25, they will be flying 4 times weekly from Cebu to Singapore.  Wow! Just wow because I have been salivating over the prospects of having a Singapore food trip for a long time. You can even start your Lion City food trip for as low as 888 pesos per way as Air Asia will take you there in their Red and White Airbus 320s.

#ScoreforSingapore Quiz Night #AirAsiainSingapore

We were Monkey Belly Bar for the #ScoreforSingapore Quiz Night organized by Air Asia. Up for grabs were roundtrip tickets for two to Singapore via Air Asia. The second prize would be trips to Manila and the bronze medallists would receive a Vikings All-You-Can-Eat Voucher.

I have never been to Singapore so I was not optimistic about my chances of winning.  I was just hoping to be lucky enough to have a well-travelled teammate. In comes fashion blogger Sophia Sanchez of http://www.iamsophiasanchez.com/.   Sophia was just in Singapore a few weeks back.  It somehow made me feel a bit confident.

There were 6 teams in the #ScoreforSingapore Quiz Night and all teams have 3 members except us.  We call our team "Marina Bae".   The competition was fun but very stiff.  After the first and second rounds, we were trailing two teams.  At the final round, we somehow got lucky and we leapfrogged one team to end up in second place.

Winning a ticket to Singapore would have been great but Manila was an excellent consolation.  It was a lucky night for me as I also won an Air Asia A320 model plane with their Instagram contest.  I went home happy and filled with tons of trivia info about Singapore.  Which made me want to go to Singapore more!

Perhaps a Singapore food trip is in the offing.

7 Dishes That I will Try in Singapore!

I used to have a favorite Singaporean hole-in-the-wall restaurant but it closed down.  Adrian of Culture Shiok introduced me his country's cuisine and I fell in love with the Singaporean cuisine ever since.  Too bad that the eatery closed down already but here are some of the dishes that I would love to eat should I go to Singapore:

1. Soya Sauce Chicken Rice - Well, Chicken Rice is Singapore's National dish and this particular stall earned a Michelin Star.   I would surely be willing to line up for hours to eat at my first ever Michelin Star restaurant.

2. Bak Kut Teh - This humble dish is their version of our Nilat-ang Baboy.  It is somehow a simple dish but Bak Kuh Teh is a comfort food to Singaporeans.

3. Laksa - This noodle in curry-like broth dish is intense. I would probably try this in the later part of the food trip because the coconut might give me an upset stomach. Flavor-wise though this a must try.

4. Fried Carrot Cake - My Singaporean friends told  me that this is not the Carrot Cake that we find in cake shops here in Cebu.  I am pretty curious about this dish that I would definitely try it in a hawker  stall somewhere.

5. Kaya Toast - I think a unique breakfast dish should be part of any food trip. If ever go to Singapore, this is on top of my Singaporean breakfast list.

6. Curry Fish Head - I want to check out at least one seafood dish in every food trip.  Singaporean Chili crabs would have been the default choice but I see a lot of restaurants serving it here. I would love to try the Curry Fish Head instead.

7. Satay - Barbecues are so popular in the Philippines.  I would definitely want some satay while doing a Singapore street food tour just for comparison.

Can you suggest other dishes for me to try in Singapore?

With more airlines offering flights to this wonderful Southeast Asian neighbor, I think more Cebuanos can go there now. Air Asia is even offering one-way tickets to Singapore for as low as 888 pesos.  That rate is even cheaper than some local destinations. I am pretty sure that I will be visiting my friends in Singapore very soon.

Michael Karlo Lim and JP Chionbian of Sugbo Mercado

Phenomenal! That is how I describe Sugbo Mercado.  This food market concept has been a game changer in the food industry here in Cebu.  I recently had a chitchat with Sugbo Mercado's Michael Karlo Lim and JP Chiongbian at Tin Gow Restaurant at the Waterfront Cebu and they bared the mouthwatering plans of Sugbo Mercado for the coming months.  I got pretty pumped after hearing about their intention to expand to other regions.

Sugbo Mercado started last year as an experiment to activate some open spaces in the Cebu IT Park.   After overcoming some birth pains, the concept has expanded to Cebu Business Park and both Sugbo Mercado locations have become certified food trip hotspots.

The weekend food market has launched several businesses that became solid local food brands.  Some stall concepts even opened stand-alone branches elsewhere like  Papa Churros, Tahotally, Lord of the Ribs, Etc. Sugbo Mercado has become a platform for many food entrepreneurs to try out different concepts and let the Cebuano  market decide its fate.

So far so good.

Sugbo Mercado's Continuing Growth

While enjoying some delicious Chinese specialties of Tin Gow like their Peking Duck, JP Chiongbian  told us the short history of Sugbo Mercado.  He is also bared that they are opening up another site this coming weekend.  The 3rd branch of Sugbo Mercado will be located at the South Road Properties inside the Il Corso property of Filinvest.  The new branch is called Sugbo Mercado SRP and it will feature new food stalls and some of our old favorites.

After SRP, the group is also planning to open in Mandaue and Mactan in the next two months.  Michael Karlo Lim added that they will temporarily stop at 5 as they want to pursue expansion across the seas.  Sugbo Mercado will be coming to places like Ilo-Ilo, Davao and even in Metro Manila in 2017.

Holiday Haven Bazaar at the IT Park

Lim added that for Christmas, the group is also organizing a bazaar. The bazaar is dubbed as "Holiday Haven Bazaar".  It will run from November 17 to December 23.  The bazaar is open to lifestyle and non-cooking food concessionaires.  It will be the perfect place to do your Christmas shopping for gifts that you will give to loved ones, manitos, and manitas.  They still have slots for those who like to sell some stuff in the bazaar. If you are interested you may email them at info@sugbomercado.com or call them at 0917-7727077.

Tin  Gow As a Meeting Place

The meeting was quick and easy.  Tin Gow made it more enjoyable.  I really feasted on the duck dishes there. I would really recommend this place for small meetings or even family gatherings.   The food is great, the ambiance is solid, and the staff is really attentive to our needs.

Event at Sugbo Mercado IT Park

It will be one busy weekend for the Sugbo Mercado team as they will have three branches plus a bazaar that will be opening this weekend.  I will be at Sugbo Mercado IT Park on  Saturday for the launch of Chinese beer TsingTao.   If you are there, let us match this beer with some of our Sugbo Mercado favorites and let me know what you think.

I am a big fan of Sugbo Mercado and I hope that the brand will continue helping start-ups in Cebu and the rest of the country. Check Sugbo Mercado this weekend at IT Park, CBC, and SRP.  Do not forget to say hi if you see me there! ;)

Join The Body Language Workshop with The Mental Assassin in Cebu

I miss +Thaddeau II Engaling.  He was one of the best team building facilitators while he was still in Cebu.  He migrated to California earlier this year. I recently went to Brown Cup at Rose Dale Talamban to meet up with his buddies from the Cebu Team Building Facilitators Network and learn about what they are up to.  Well, they are bringing the "Mental Assasin" to Cebu for a Body Language Advantage workshop and I am going to attend it.

Enjoying Coffee and Food at Brown Cup

Brown Cup is a cafe near USC Talamban that is popular with students who are looking for a good place to cram or do some school work.  The nice thing about this cafe is that they serve some yummy hot food.  I had their pork chops and they are quite good especially for a cafe.  The place is also ideal for casual meetings with friends or classmates.

Chat with Philip and Chris of Cebu TeamBuilding Facilitators Network

Philip TanChris Avila

Philip Tan and Chris Avila wanted to meet to tell me about the event that they are organizing on the 26th of this month.  The Cebu TeamBuilding Facilitators is bringing Justin Pinon aka Mental Assasin for a one-day Body Language Workshop.  The Mental Assassin is one of the country's top mentalists.  He has performed in several corporate events and has appeared in several TV shows.  He uses psychology and the power of observation to "read" people's minds.  He wants to share to Cebuanos some of the things he learned about body language and how to use it to your advantage.

I have trained people in sales before and one major factor in becoming a better salesperson is definitely the proper use of body language.  I really find a lot of practical benefits for people to join this workshop.

5 Types of people who should join Mental Assasin's Body Language Advantage Workshop

1. Salespeople - The workshop can really improve your selling skills because it can teach you how to project themselves better in front of clients.  It will also teach you how to "read" your clients through their body language. If you can easily detect "buying signals" by watching microexpressions then you are on your way to becoming the next sales superstar.

2.
People who are seeking "forever" - Maybe one of the reasons why your crush has not noticed you is because of your body language or facial expressions.  Maybe you come out fake or worse creepy in face to face interactions.  You can learn to be more attractive by tweaking your body language.

3.
Students - Life is sales. Some people might not need help in attracting the opposite gender but they would need help in developing a good rapport with people in authority like teachers or future employers.  Being able to appear confident and competent would definitely help you with your grades or in nailing your job interviews.

4.
Managers - A lot of people do not like their managers because they cannot connect with them.  Gen X and millennials normally clash but knowing the Body Language Advantage would probably minimize some problems.

5.
Trainers - Many trainers only focus on spiels and the information that their trainees need to know. A lot of times the difference between success and failure is due to the delivery of the information.  With some knowledge of Body Language, trainers can effectively help their trainees in the proper execution of their tasks.

I really believe that this workshop can help many people.  I was so excited when I learned about this event from Philip and Chris.  I know a lot of friends who could greatly benefit by joining the Body Language Workshop.

Now I see you, Bai: The Body Language Advantage with Justin Pinon aka Mental Assassin will be  held on November 26 at the J Center Mall Hyacinth Convention Hall.  It has 2 sessions, one for students in the morning and an afternoon session with professionals.
