The volunteers from Globe Telecoms continue with the meal-packing activity even after making it to the Guinness World Record for Rise Against Hunger
Employees of Globe Telecom joined hundreds of volunteers from USA, Italy, India and South Africa, in helping international non-government organization Rise Against Hunger (RAH) achieve its goal of entering the Guinness World Record with the greatest number of people assembling hunger relief packages simultaneously at multiple venues in five minutes.

The activity held in celebration of World Food Day, was also a way for all parties to publicly show commitment to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 2, that is “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.”

Amid an atmosphere of excitement, 214 volunteers from the Philippines were able to complete the task of packing meals consisting of a vitamin sachet, soy, veggies, and rice, in barely three minutes. The Philippine team also had the most number of participants out of 832 volunteers from over 10 sites globally.

The Philippine volunteers were propelled into action not only by the knowledge that they will be part of history but more because of their innate desire to help.  All meals packed during the Manila leg will be distributed to families in Cagayan Valley and Benguet who suffered from the onslaught of Typhoon Ompong last September.

“While I’m proud to be part of this momentous event, I am here primarily because I want to help even if there is no recognition,” said Danni Fernandez, Head of Globe Office Collaboration who also participated in the volunteering activity. “I am also overwhelmed because we were able to do a good deed and set a record at the same time.”

Funds for the Philippine meal packs came from donations by some 17,500 Globe customers of their Globe Reward points amounting to P1.1 million which was further matched by Globe for a total donation of P2.2 million.  Even after the Guinness challenge, the volunteers continued to pack the rest of the over 22,000 meal packs which will provide 1,500 families with sustenance for at least 14 days.

“While Globe works towards reaching its business goals, it also provides employees with greater opportunities to help in the communities and marginalized sector of our country through various means. Supporting Rise Against Hunger in this meal packing activity is one way of instilling a sense of higher purpose among our employees,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP for Corporate Communications.

In 2017 alone, Globe employee volunteerism reached an all-time high of 3,803 unique employee volunteers, comprising more than half of the entire Globe workforce.

Globe is an active supporter of RAH which has been fulfilling its commitment to end hunger across the globe for 20 years.  RAH produces healthy food packs for calamity response and facilitates packing activities to enable large groups of volunteers to take part in relief operations.

#TheSustainableDiner: Mangga Cafe - From Waste to Food

In the 3rd blog post on #TheSustainableDiner Series, we are featuring Mangga Cafe.  At first glance, you might think that this cafe is just an ordinary cafe serving baked goodies with mangoes but you will be in awe once you know their story.  You see, Mangga Cafe serves bread, tea, coffee, and cakes that are made from Mango Flour.   Mango flour is made by processing discarded mango seeds.  Those mango seeds that we usually just throw away gets transformed into delicious food.  It is Food to Waste to Food. I have eaten at a lot of cafes in my life and this is just one of those that I want to heavily promote.

Mangga Cafe, Mange Flour, Waste to Food, #TheSustainableDiner, Zero Waste Dining. #EatlocalPH, Kalami Cebu, Top Cebu Blogs, Cebu Food Blogger

5 Reasons Why I Support Mangga Cafe

#ZeroWasteDining

I cannot imagine that Mangga Cafe is turning food waste back into food.  When I learned about their story, I was simply amazed.  I hate wasting food.  That is probably one of the biggest reasons that I gained so much weight in the past couple of years.

I love mangoes especially the ones from Guadalupe.  I would say that they are the best in the world. When we eat mangoes we just throw away its seeds.  It is amazing to know that somehow I was eating those discarded seeds when I was enjoying my sandwich and iced tea at Mangga Cafe.  If you are a restaurant or a business that is transforming things we deemed useless into useful stuff, you get a hug from me.  Kudos to whoever thought about making mango seeds into flour!

CSR Element

I also learned that part of the income of Mangga Cafe will be used to finance a housing project for garbage scavengers in Lapu-Lapu City.  Not only that this project will provide them housing, the scavengers also get income from collecting the mango seeds that will be made into mango flour.  Every bread that you buy will go a long way to helping other people.

#EatLocalPH

Mangga Cafe is a local business that promotes local ingredients.  I am definitely going to patronize them because they fall under my #EatLocalPH cause.  I like the idea that some Cebuano businesses are embracing innovation that is relevant not only for profit but also for the environment.  I hope you can help promote this cafe.

Nutritious

Mango flour is unbleached and it is free from gluten, cholesterol, and genetically modified organism (GMO).  It contains anti-oxidants that will benefit our body.  It is really a good substitute for white flour.  The mango flour is used to make mango bars, bread, pastries, tea, and coffee at Mangga Cafe.

Yummy

I tried some of their sandwiches and beverages and I really liked it. One of my favorites at Mangga Cafe would the Humba wraps.  Price-wise, it is just like going to your favorite coffee shop.  Sandwiches are sold from 99-148 pesos depending on the filling.  Try it out and most likely you will not taste much of a difference in terms of flavor if you compare the bread here to what you are used to.

I will definitely be back to Mangga Cafe and hopefully, you will find time to check them out as well.   The cafe is at the 2nd level of Robinsons Cybergate Cebu.

I will be looking for more establishments that have a similar waste to food programs,  I hope that there will be many.  Food wastage is actually a big problem and having programs like the conversion of seeds to flour is one way to offset it.  If you know some program that has a similar goal, please inform me by making a comment or send me an email at calolano911@gmail.com.

*This post is the 3rd blog post on #TheSustainableDiner Series that will be in support of WWF-Philippines' program on sustainable dining.

Oyster Food Trip at Charcoal Boy Escario

Oyster Mukbang by Kalami Cebu at Charcoal Boy Escario

Some people say that one of the most effective aphrodisiacs would be oysters.  If it is true then I can show you a restaurant that you should go to have an amazing oyster food trip at an affordable price.  Charcoal Boy has been thriving in Cebu in the past 2 years with their oysters and grilled food.  They recently opened Charcoal Boy Escario and I had my fill of their delicious oysters from Ilo-Ilo.

The Great Charcoal Boy Oyster Food Trip

I was recently invited at Charcoal Boy Escario for their grand opening.  It was a day after Valentine's Day and I guess it was a perfect day for some oysters.  I have been a big fan of Charcoal Boy since early last year when my wife and I bumped into their main branch at Mahogany Place.  I knew that I would have a great time at the opening of their new branch.  So, let us meet the oysters.

Steamed Oysters - 105 pesos ($2.10) per Serving

Steamed Oysters at Charcoal Boy
I started my Oyster food trip with some steamed Oysters.  The owners said that this is one of their top sellers. I am not surprised since it is priced 105 pesos only.  While eating raw or "naked" might be the ultimate oyster experience, steamed comes a close second and I think it is a safer way to enjoy the unadulterated flavor of this bivalve mollusk.

I finished more than 5 steamed oysters over the course of my lunch.  I still taste the juices that taste like the sea.  The oysters at Charcoal boy are really fresh and the kitchen knows how to expertly handle the seashell.  The oysters come from the neighboring island of Ilo-ilo where I heard that the going price for these is less than 200 pesos a sack. :)

Baked Cheese and Garlic - 145 pesos ($2.90) for an 8-piece Serving

Baked Cheese and Garlic at 145 pesos at Charcoal Boy Escario
A lot of my friends who were there loved this variant.  This is my wife's favorite too. Well, I am not surprised since many things in this world become way better after putting some cheese on it.  Apparently, cheese and garlic work like magic for oysters.  I am still biased to having fewer toppings but I would not argue against my wife. I would definitely order this the next time I visit the new branch with the love of my life.

Baked Hot Chili Oyster - 138 Pesos

Baked Hot Chili Oysters is a great aphrodisiac
For people who love their oyster spicy, they should get the Baked Hot Chili Oysters.  The spiciness just explodes in the palate which for me adds to the "sex appeal" of oysters.  The capsaicin in chilis will make you feel hot while dopamine in oysters will increase desire.  In fact, Cosmo listed these 2 in their Top 23 aphrodisiacs.  Probably this is not a good item if you are single and alone.

Oyster Kinilaw - 165 pesos ($3.30)

Fresh Oyster Kinilaw is served at Charcoal Boy Escario
Kinilaw is a Cebuano thing where we take raw meat (usually fish) and bathe it in vinegar, onions, and chili.  Well, I actually find it refreshing that Charcoal Boy has Oyster Kinilaw and I could say that they executed it marvelously.  You really need fresh oysters to offer such dish and it is a sign of confidence of the freshness of their raw materials that the owners offer Oyster Kinilaw in their restaurants.

Sizzling Oysters - 155 pesos ($3.10)

Charcoal Boy's Sizzling Oysters
Fragrant, sweet, and spicy. I would not mind eating oysters without rice except with the Sizzling Oysters.  This dish would just make me want to order rice.  It is delicious and I like putting the reduced sauce on my rice.  I won't recommend this dish to my friends who are into Keto diet because it will make them miss rice more.

Other Variants - Oyster Rockefeller (165 Pesos) and Crispy Fried Oyster (155 Pesos)

An Oyster Sampler Platter would be perfect for all Oyster fans.
If you prefer the oyster with creamy sauce then get the Oyster Rockefeller while the Crispy Fried Oyster is for those who want the oysters well-cooked with a crispy coating.

Charcoal Boy actually showed a sampler platter that is yet to be released and I think it would be a great idea.  This kind of platter gives you variety that makes you appreciate more what this budding restaurant chain is doing.

Other Good Stuff at Charcoal Boy

Charcoal Boy Escario Menu circa February 2019
The menu is actually extensive.  I do not think they will call themselves Charcoal Boy without a good line-up of grilled dishes.  They actually offer chicken barbecue, Pork Belly Barbecue, Liempo, Tanigue, Bangus, and Stuffed Squid.  The a la carte menu also includes Filipino favorites like Sinigang, Crispy Pata, and Pancit Canton.  Prices are really reasonable but for me, the best value-for-money buy here is their Combo meals that have their delicious oysters paired with something from their grill with unlimited rice.

chunky and Meaty Pork Belly Barbecue

Chicken Pecho Barbecue is also perfect for combo meals

Among the grilled items that were showcased on the opening of Charcoal Boy Escario was the Pork Belly Barbecue and the Chicken Barbecue.  You can never go wrong with these two especially when you offer it with unlimited servings of rice.  The owners of Mang Inasal made billions out of that concept and probably the owners of Charcoal Boy could too.

Charcoal Boy Escario - Final Verdict

I truly enjoyed dining there and definitely, I will be back very soon. Charcoal Boy is one of the many places that guarantee that you will come out with a full tummy when you eat there.  And if you want to know my verdict for this place, I will let my stomach tell you.  The best test if an oyster/seafood place is good is in how your stomach felt a few hours or a day after eating in the restaurant.  Mine felt great!

Charcoal Boy Escario is located at M2 Building, Escario Street, Cebu City.  Congratulations to the owners and franchisees of the newly opened restaurant.

Steakhouse in Cebu: Angus Dan's

Carlo Olano of Kalami Cebu enjoying some steak at Angus Dan's

There was a time that steakhouses in Cebu where an endangered species after one of its most established one (David's Steakhouse) closed down.  I saw the "steak revival" in the past couple of years as more and more establishments opened specializing in steak.   The Choobi Choobi group recently joined the fray by opening the newest steakhouse in Cebu, Angus Dan's.

Choobi Choobi Restaurant Philosophy

According to Choobi Choobi CEO Constantine Tanchan, their company philosophy is to serve good food at the same time, give their customers the best bang for their buck.  Choobi Choobi Seafood restaurant is surely one of the best value for money restaurants in Cebu while the Yakiniku-concept Kogi-Q is an affordable alternative to yakiniku restaurants and Korean barbecues.  Angus Dan's proposition would be that they will be the affordable steakhouse in Cebu that will serve not-so expensive steaks in an upscale environment.

Choobi Choobi CEO Augustine Tanchan unveils his steak restaurant concept

The concept could be a big winner as the restaurant is located at the heart of the city and is very accessible to residents in nearby barangays, tourists staying at nearby hotels, medical practitioners in nearby hospitals, and working people from nearby offices.  The Capitol Site area is filled with so many good restaurants but none of them specialize in steak.

Dining at the Newest Steakhouse in Cebu

I was invited to attend the blessing of Angus Dan's along with other bloggers and friends from the media.  My initial impression is that the window side has a nice American diner feel and the place has a lot of areas that could make the Instagram generation happy.

New York-inspired Steak and Seafood House, Angus Dan's

When I checked out their menu, I learned that they serve breakfast and aside from steaks, they serve a lot of meat and seafood dishes.  I was really looking forward to what they are going to serve us that afternoon.

Sisig Nachos - 180

sisig nachos - Nachos served with a cheesy Sisig Dip
This is basically nachos served with a cheesy sisig dip topped with chopped tomatoes.  All I can say is that the sisig dip is fantastic.  It is great with nachos but I could have probably eaten it with rice or have a version as a pasta sauce.

Calamari - 190
Calami at Angus Dan's, steakhouse in Cebu
As a sister restaurant of Choobi Choobi, it was expected that their calamari would be spot on and yes, it was.

Honey Wings - 230
honey wings at Angus Dan's Steakhouse in Cebu
I can totally understand why my tablemates loved this dish as it was flavorful.  It could have been great with rice as well.

Crispy Onion Mound - 170
A mound of Onion Rings
It is one big serving of onion rings that could please any onion lover.  It would be a great side dish if they serve burgers which should be on their menu (hopefully soon).

Beef Salpicao - 295
the lean Beef Salpicao
It has good lean meat and it was seasoned well.  It was good but not yet Golden Prince salpicao level. ;)

Angus Dan's Grilled Short Ribs - 1190
I liked this one a lot. The meat was tender. juicy and really delicious.   This could be an excellent cheaper alternative to The Weekend's Flinstone.

USDA Ribeye Steak - 1100
USA Choice Ribeye sold at 1100 per serving at Angus Dan's Steakhouse in Cebu
A 400 gram serving of a USDA Choice Ribeye sold at 1,100 pesos is a great "Steak 101" meal for a millennial.  You can have an awesome steak experience here without breaking the bank.  A lot of Cebuanos still eat steaks well done which makes the price point and meat quality perfect for the market (Or they can get the 880-peso variant).

Dan's Signature Swordfish Belly - 450
Swordfish Belly - Another Angus Dan's specialty
If you are not into red meat and your date takes you to Angus Dan's then I think you will still end up with a happy tummy because they have a lot of seafood specialties like the Swordfish Belly.  At 450, it is a great alternative to salmon or tuna.

Kalami Cebu Verdict

I am really glad that a restaurant like this opened in the area. While there are so many alternatives for dining this side of Osmena Boulevard, nobody specialized in steak and nobody can offer the vibe and ambiance of Angus Dan's.

The selection is impressive (they even have Maine lobsters).  The best thing for me here is the pricing as you can have a good meal even for less than 300 pesos a person. That has always been the strength of Choobi-Choobi and it is one of the main selling factors of Angus Dan's.

Angus Dan's is also perfect for wannabe steak lovers -the ones that are starting to explore the world of steaks.  If you want to teach someone the intricacies on the doneness of meat, it is better to start it at a restaurant like this.  You just cannot go to a restaurant that served some dry aged tomahawks and be forced to have a well-done steak because your companion/date says that they do not want something bloody.

Serious steak lovers will still enjoy their time here because the meat is priced right.  They served
USDA Choice Cuts steak priced as USDA Choice Cuts.  They could have gotten away with pricing it higher but they didn't.

I really admire the owners for sticking to their philosophy and for giving Cebuanos restaurants that put value for money as its main Unique Selling Point.
I will definitely be back soon.

Cebu Lechon Restaurants: House of Lechon Don Jose Avila Street

House of Lechon Don Jose Avila St. Branch

When it comes to food, the number 1 item that Cebuanos would be proud of is our inasal or lechon.  For years, it has been our trademark and even the late Anthony Bourdain exclaimed that here in Cebu, he found the best pig ever.  In the past, we normally eat Lechon Cebu at hole-in-wall eating places.  Now, we see the rise of many restaurants that offer Lechon as its main specialty and one of the best of this kind of establishments is the House of Lechon.  I recently visited their newest branch at Don Jose Avila St., Capitol Site and here is a short review.

House of Lechon Don Jose Avila Street Initial Impressions

Newest House of Lechon Branch

The new House of Lechon Branch is located very close to Sacred Heart School Hijas and Cebu Doctor's University Hospital.  It is in the building that was once Captain A's Restaurant.   One good thing about this place is that this will be a convenient place to eat for the doctors, med reps, nurses and student in the nearby hospitals.  Capitol Site also has a lot of nearby offices, schools, and hotels which give this branch many potential customers. There is ample parking space in the establishment which makes it convenient for car owners to dine here.

Interior Shot of House of Lechon Capitol Site

House of Lechon 2nd Floor

Entering the new branch for House of Lechon, the first thing I noticed is the lighting.  The place is well-lit and it gives the impression that it is new and clean.  The cool blue accents give the restaurant some calming effect.  I also noticed the local touch when it comes to furniture, lights, and walls.  It has a unique vibe for a Lechon restaurant.

House of Lechon menu back 2019House of Lechon Menu front

A kilo of lechon here is priced at 785 (Carcar Lechon) or 850 (Spicy).  If you compare that to the streets, you might say it is a bit expensive but if you compare it to other lechon restaurants, it is actually very competitive.  The other dishes on the menu are priced reasonably.  House of Lechon is positioning itself as a great alternative to Filipino restaurants that mainly serves the B, Upper C, and tourist markets.

Special Carcar Lechon

While the menu is filled with many delicious choices, you have to order lechon when you come here.  They offer the Cebuano specialty in two variants: The Special Carcar Lechon and The Spicy Lechon.

Carcar City, a city in the Southern part of Cebu, is known for having a different way of serving the pork specialty.  In Carcar, the lechon makers save the drippings and when people buy a kilo or two, the lechon vendors then pour some drippings on it.  The drippings will give the lechon that extra oomph.  House of Lechon serves you lechon with a serving of lechon drippings.

You can have the option to pour it over your lechon or over your rice which I do sometimes.  The sauce is oily and salty but it typically makes me eat more.  If you like your lechon spicy, you can order the other variant.
Baked Scallops

Gambas a la Concasse

Gising Gising

Tuna Sisig

The House of Lechon menu has many other dishes that complement their lechon.   You can start your meal with some soup or seafood.  Their scallops, gambas and the newly-introduced Tuna Sisig are highly recommended.  If you want to go local, you could order dinuguan and bam-i (When I was younger, lechon plus dinuguan plus bam-i was my ultimate birthday combo).   For veggies, you can go with Gising-Gising, Bicol Express, and Pinakbet.

Oreo Mango Float

There are so many amazing savory dishes here and the dessert choices can make any sweet tooth happy.  One of the desserts that I can recommend here is the Oreo Mango float.

Kalami Cebu Verdict on House of Lechon

House of Lechon is surely one of the best places to eat lechon in the lechon capital of the world.  It is a perfect place to take tourists and balikbayans who look for lechon and want to eat it in a comfortable setting.

Personally, I always get a #happytummy when dining here because the menu is filled with excellent dishes that make every meal a feast.   I normally eat here with family and friends especially when we have visitors from out of town.  Just like in any other lechon restaurant,  I normally come at around 11 a.m. or just before 6 p.m. to get the best lechon servings.

You have to come "early" so that you can truly have a great lechon experience.  You cannot expect to have a 5-star lechon if you arrive at 1:30 for lunch or past 8 pm for dinner.  This tip is for any lechon place in Cebu, be it in a restaurant or a lechon stall.

In the end, House of Lechon is an awesome restaurant with a lechon-centric menu accompanied with a solid line-up of Filipino dishes that will guarantee that diners will have a well-rounded meal.  It is definitely one of the best lechon restaurants out there.

Food Find of the Day: 50-Peso Champorado from Maitre Chocolatier

50-peso Champorado at Maitre Chocolatier at Ayala Terraces Cebu
When I was a kid, I was always required to sleep in the afternoon.  The reward  is a delicious merienda.  One of my favorite merienda item is the Champorado.  I recently discovered a good place to this chocolatey rice porridge. I am quite surprised that Maitre Chocolatier at Ayala Terraces Cebu serves this Pinoy snack at a sweet price.

Maitre Chocolatier Cebu

The 50-Peso Champorado at Chocolatier

I actually discovered this dish by accident today as I was looking for a place to have a late lunch. I wanted to try something new and ended up at a 10 year old restaurant that I have not visited ever.

I have seen this place before but I always overlook it because I thought it was a dessert place and I am not really into sweets. I was pleasantly surprised to see on their menu some pasta, sandwiches, and rice meals.

One of the most surprising items for me is definitely the 50-peso Champorado! It is the good old champorado topped with some melted white chocolate. Beat that!

Should you wish to eat Champorado at Ayala Center Cebu, you should head to Maitre Chocolatier!1

Best Burgers in Cebu - Squat Burger by Stoke Burgers

Carlo Olano of Kalami Cebu meets the Squat Burger at Stoke Burgers
Who does not love burgers?  One night, I suddenly had a burger craving and I end up traveling to Mambaling to eat at the newly-opened Stoked Burgers.  I tried out their Squat Burger and it gave me one of my best burger experiences in recent months.

Just like many Cebuanos, I love meat.   When it comes to meat sandwiches, nothing beats a good old hamburger.  So, when Chef Nestor Alcoseba of Seda Hotel Cebu said that I need to check out this new burger place in Mambaling, I went there ASAP.

Finding Stoke Burgers

Best Burger Places in Cebu, Stoke Burgers
To be honest, I rarely go to Mambaling except when I occasionally visit SM Seaside City Cebu.  Since I am not so familiar with the place, I enlisted the help of my trusty motorcycle driver, Fred.  Coming from SM Seaside, we had to take a U-Turn at base of the Mambaling flyover so that we can turn to Tagunol Street.  Stoke Burgers was not really hard to find once you are on that street (I think they are now in Google Maps).
Stoke Burgers Menu
The menu was pretty straightforward.  You come here for the burgers and they basically have 3 sizes.  Their base cheeseburger is called the lightweight burger and it is priced at 90 pesos.  Next up is the squat burger- Triple bacon burger with 100% Beef Patty, cheddar cheese, tomato, cucumber, and a fried egg.  Their signature burger is the deadlift burger which is an upgraded squat burger with the addition of one more burger patty, mushrooms, jalapeno, and the Stoke Special Sauce plus french fries for only 280 pesos.

As much as I wanted to get the Deadlift Burger, I decided to chill and I just settle for the Squat Burger.  Do you want to know why? Well, it was late at night and did not intend to sleep with a kilo of food in my stomach and I find the Squat Burger as the more logical and value-for-money choice. (Yes, I pay for my food too!)

Stoke Burger's Squat Burger

A newly made burger at Stoke Burgers Cebu

The Squat Burger and the Lightweight Burger at Stoke Burgers
I love watching people making the food that I eat.  Watching the crew here is kinda hypnotic and it makes me want to devour the burgers once ready.  We arrived there past eleven and the crew was still taking orders from loyal customers.  I even saw some familiar faces.  Due to the deluge of late-night eaters, my order took time to make but I did not mind at all.  I was just mesmerized by the sights and sounds.  Indeed, time flies when you are having fun.

The Squat Burger was just perfect.  For me, it was like eating breakfast in a burger at midnight.  The bacon, the egg, the cheese, the veggies, and of course, the beef just make an amazing combination in the mouth.  It was creamy, juicy, crunchy, salty, sour, and sweet.  It was balanced! For a second, I even regretted that I did not get the Deadlift Burger.  In my hands though, was the best burger in the world at that specific second.

The simple verdict was that I like it. Nah, I like it a lot. Ok fine, I was Stoked!  I really want you to try it out.   Eat it there! Watch while they make you a hamburger.  Smell it, taste it and be stoked. :)

The awesome midnight crew of Stoke Burgers Cebu

I got to give a big shout out to the crew and owners of Stoke Burgers.  You got a good one, please make it last! :)

By the way #Kalaminions, do you think I should re-do my Sulit Ba Video and include this on the list?

Amazing Filipino Street Food That You Must Try: Beef Pares Soup No.5

$

Beef Pares in Makati City, Philippines
The Philippines has a lot of amazing street food that tourists must try.  These street foods are not heavily marketed but locals love it.  One great example is the beef pares in the streets of Metro Manila.  Every time I go to Manila, I make sure that I will have a beef pares for breakfast and you should too.

Falling in Love with Beef Pares

A couple of decades ago, I worked in Makati and my days usually start very early that I rarely ate breakfast at home.  I lived in Quezon City and it pays to travel early.  I go out of the house before 7 am and I typically arrived in the office before 8 am.  The first thing I do after timing in would be to look for something to eat.

a crowded Beef Pares stall in Metro Manila

The options were plenty already back then but I always get drawn to the food cart that sells beef stew early in the morning.  Who would not want some hot stew early in the morning?  It was not only the stew but the fried rice and the options you can do with it.  Another great thing about it is that it was cheap.  For 30 pesos, I could already get a filling meal back then.

Beef Pares with fried garlic and kalamansi sauce
Beef Pares is a beef stew with the beef cut in small pieces.  You can have the option of having sinangag or garlic rice with it or you can have it as a mami or noodle soup.  You could have with noodles and order rice as well. Normally I do that because the mami version was cheaper by 5 pesos.  One of the best things about these stalls is that they are not greedy with their sauces like their chili sauce,  kalamansi extract, patis (fish sauce), soy sauce and vinegar.  You can season your stew any way you liked it.

When I moved back to Cebu, I just could not find something like it.  Yes, we also have delicious stews like balbacua and lansiao but it is not usually served early in the morning.  I truly missed my filling Beef Pares breakfast.

Eating it in Makati

The best stew in Manila
A month ago, I got a sponsored trip by GrabFood to Manila to watch Wanderland 2019.  We stayed in the beautiful I'm Hotel and breakfast there was awesome.  Since we were in the Poblacion area, I planned to explore and see what Poblacion has to offer but because Wanderland was held in Alabang we normally go home past midnight.  I was not able to do my planned Poblacion food crawl save for eating at El Chupacabra

On our last day, I decided to wake up early and explore.  I first went to St. Peter and Paul Parish to hear mass then I went looking for a place to eat.  I was really hoping to find a beef pares stall. I cannot seem to find one on the side streets of Makati Avenue until I saw one in Polaris Street.

Lo and behold, there it was and it was crowded already.  It was around 7:30 AM.  I checked what they had.  I saw these plastics floating on the stew and I asked the owner about it.  He said it was Soup No. 5 and brains.  The appeal of having bull's testicles early on a Monday morning just excited me. I decided to get one.  It was so good that I ordered an extra serving of rice and if I would not be eating a second breakfast at the hotel, I would have ordered more.   I think I spend only 60 pesos there.  That is just around $1.20

Why you should eat Beef Pares?

No.1 it is delicious.  Seriously, it is in my Top 3 street foods ever.  Street food is popular all around the world and it is usually eaten at night.  This is served in the morning.  It has really tender meat and if you love offal, they can give you so many options.   The rice and the sauces complete the experience.

The second consideration is the price.  It is really cheap and a way better alternative to having fast food for breakfast.  Lastly, I want you to try it because it is one of the best ways to have breakfast.  The warm stew warms your body and soul.  The rice will power you through the busy day.  Eating it with the locals will just give you a feel on how varied the tastes of Filipinos with the way they season their stew.   Put some kalamansi on your stew and taste how it creates magic in your palate.

How I wish there was a Beef Pares stall in Cebu but I really do not mind because the absence gives me a good reason to visit Metro Manila at least once a year.

Best Value Korean BBQ Place in Cebu: Barangay Seoul

Carlo Olano of Kalami Cebu enjoying Samgyeopsal at Barangay Seoul
For me, Korean BBQ Places are among the "healthiest" All-You-Can restaurants out there.   All-You-Can-Eat Restaurants makes you binge; but, with Korean Barbecues, you also get to eat a good amount of vegetables. I recently dined at the newly-opened Barangay Seoul and as expected, had a grand time eating their unlimited samgyeopsal and other Korean specialties.  I even got to do a Samyang Special Noodle Challenge.

Value for Money Korean Barbecue: Barangay Seoul

Medical Students having sampgyeopsal

There are so many places now in Cebu that offer All-You-Can-Eat chicken wings for 199 pesos. At 199 pesos, you can have unlimited servings of chicken wings, rice, and iced tea. Just for 100 pesos more, you can have an All-You-Can-Eat Sampgyeopsal (grilled pork) and more for lunch at Barangay Seoul.  Dishes could include Korean fried chicken, kimchi frioed rice, kimchi sinigang, Korean fish cakes, kimchi, japchae, dak galbi, and a whole lot more. If that is not a great value for money buffet, then I do not know what is.

Barangay Seoul as a perfect dinner date place

For dinner, the All-You-Can-Eat is at 349 pesos per head and the price is valid for a minimum of 2 people. So, if you come here you have to bring someone with you. It would be a fine excuse for you to ask your crush to lunch or dinner. Samgyeopsal and Chill, anyone?

DIY Korean Noodles and #SpicyNoodleChallenge

DIY Noodle Station at Barangay Seoul

I love instant noodles and Korean Ramyeon is one of the best in the world.  One unique thing you can do here at Barangay Seoul is to cook your own Korean noodles. They have several brands to choose from and you can cook on your table or have the waiters do it for you.

The best place to have a Samyang Spicy Noodle Challenge in Cebu

Since we are already talking about Korean noodles, here at Barangay Seoul you can actually do a Samyang Spicy Noodle Challenge.  The restaurant is a perfect place to shoot a spicy noodle challenge for your vlog or Instagram.  The lighting is more than adequate and the restaurant gives out a Korean vibe. Should it become too hot for you, well you can always eat some coleslaw or wash it down with some drinks.  Try it out and let me know what happened.

Kalami Cebu Verdict: 3 Best Things about Barangay Seoul

Variety

A buffet is judged by the quantity and quality of dishes that a restaurant offers.  Here at Barangay Seoul, you get so many yummy dishes that go so well with the unlimited grilled pork belly. Here  are some pictures of the dishes that you can have there:

Tteokbooki is a Korean rice cake dish
Tteokbokki is a savory rice cake dish that is popular among Koreans.  The rice cakes have the texture of our local budbud, but it is flavored with a savory sauce that might be surprising at first because we are used to having rice cakes with some sweet hot chocolate drink.

Kimchi fried rice is perfect for samgyeopsal
Since we Filipinos love rice, the owners made sure to serve Kimchi Fried Rice or Kimchi bokkeum bap. For sure, fried rice and grilled meat is a match made in heaven.

Barangay Seoul's chikin
For chicken, they have KFC or Korean Fried Chicken.  It is perfect as an appetizer, main dish, or as a "pulutan" for beer or soju.

Japchae in a Korean buffet
If Cebu has bam-i, Seoul has Japchae.  This stir-fried glass noodles and vegetable dish is present in almost all Korean restaurants.

Fries for a Korean dinner?
If you love some interesting texture in your sampgyeopsal wrap, then you can put fries on it.

Perfect condiments for Samgyeopsal
Barangay Seoul has a variety of sauces and condiments for your meat like the Ssamjang, salt and pepper, garlic, roasted soybean, etc.

Barangay Seoul's Kimchi and other vegetable salads and pickles
They also serve pickles and salads.   You have to have some kimchi when you plan to eat a lot of samgyeopsal.
Spicy Korean Marinated Pork

Korean Marinated Pork
They serve two kinds of marinated pork or bulgogi.  I prefer the spicy version, but the non-spicy one is also good.
Dak Galbi is another popular Korean chicken dish
Dak Galbi or Korean Spicy Chicken Stir Fry is also served here.

Korean fish cakes on a stick in Cebu
And if you want to have a Seoul street food feel, you can have some Korean fish cakes on a stick.  Take a snap and pretend that you are having a Korean street food trip.

Meat and the Samgyeopsal Experience

Korean Grilled meat at Barangay Seoul in Cebu
For an affordable samgyeopsal place, Barangay Seoul did not take the pork for granted.  They actually pre-cook the meat on a charcoal grill to give it a more authentic flavor.  They also use a high power non-stick and non-smoke stove for a perfect Korean barbecue experience.  Their utensils and plates have to be commended as well.  They even have trainer chopsticks for the beginners or kids.

Price
I cannot label this restaurant as the best value Korean BBQ place in Cebu City if I was not happy with the price.  For 299 pesos, it is hard to find a similar filling experience with the variety and quality that I have tried here at Barangay Seoul.  The dinner rate of 349 is still a bargain.  I would surely come back here for more.

Barangay Seoul is located G/F Mandaue Hotel - Cebu City Branch, Juana Osmena corner M.P. Yap Street, Cebu City.  It is just a few meters away from Baseline Residences.  You can use Google Maps to get the exact location.  They can also be found in your Angkas and Grab Apps.

Daniel Cabrera graduates Elementary with the the help of Ronald McDonald House Charities

CEBU, Philippines— In 2015, Daniel Cabrera was known all over the world as the little boy studying on the pavement under a faint light coming from a McDonald’s restaurant.

Four years later, friends and family look back at the fateful story in a special party for Daniel as he graduated from Subangdaku Elementary School.

To celebrate Daniel’s achievements, McDonald’s Philippines, through its charity of choice, Ronald McDonald House of Charities (RMHC), treated him to a graduation party in McDonald’s North Reclamation, Cebu—the same branch where Daniel was snapped by Joyce Torrefranca studying.

Torrefranca’s original post featuring Daniel first made its rounds on social media in June 2015 and has been picked up by local and international media shortly after. The post inspired a lot of netizens and brought about outpouring support not only from local organizations but also from the international community.

Since learning about the heartwarming story of Daniel, RMHC has been supporting him by providing him with his different school needs such as allowance, supplies, and uniform.

“We are very happy for Daniel now that he has graduated elementary. We are pleased to be able to witness and be part of his story of hard work and dedication that continues to inspire many. This Cebu Food Stall will make You Eat ... Rabbit! | D'Bunnychon

D'Bunnychon, Cebu's First Rabbit Restaurant

Rabbits are such cute pets making it difficult for most of us to cook or eat such beautiful animals.  But, there is a new restaurant in The Market by Sugbo Mercado that is hoping to convince us that we consider eating rabbit meat.  I had dinner at D'Bunnychon last week and I am somehow convinced that we should give rabbit meat a chance.

D'BunnyChon:  A Case for Eating Rabbit Meat

Before I ate at D'Bunnychonm I know rabbits are eaten in other parts of the world.  I had an Aunt who lives in France who asked me before if she can cook my pet rabbit because it is delicious as a "serious joke".  There are people who eat rabbit and they are not bad people.

To be honest, I admire the gutsiness of the owners of D'Bunnychon.  It takes a lot of courage to introduce new meat in the market and it comes from such cute creatures.   I grew up with a dad that raised chickens and I did not like eating our own "pets".  For sure, the restaurant will face some kind of resistance.

So, I asked the owner why?  I learned that this restaurant was created by accident after the owners who started raising rabbits for fertilizer (cold manure) accidentally attended a seminar on raising rabbits for meat.  Apparently, the Bureau of Animal Industry has been trying to develop the local rabbit industry.

Rabbits were introduced in the Philippines at the end of World War 2 by the US Peace Corps to augment food supply.  It never picked up since these "local breeds" were sold as pets instead.  So, why are they trying to promote eating rabbits?

5 Reasons to Eat Rabbit Meat

Roasted Rabbit in Cebu

1. High in Protein - Pound for pound, Rabbit meat has higher protein than beef and chicken.  Rabbit meat is 20.9% Protein (Chicken is at 20%, Beef at 16.3%, Pork at 11.9%).   This meat is an awesome protein source making it great for athletes and dieters.

2. Low in Saturated Fat and Calories - At 10.25% fat compared to 11% of chicken and 28% of beef, this meat is "healthier" than the more popular choices.  Rabbit meat has also the lowest calorie per pound.

3. Rich in Minerals - Rabbit meat is rich in potassium, phosphorus, selenium, Omega 3, Vitamin B3 and B12.

4. Organic - Rabbits are fed with grass and water.  Unlike commercially-bred meat where raisers give hormones to induce growth or antibiotics to combat diseases,  rabbits are raised by backyard breeders who do not use or need the medicines.

5. Sustainable - For the same amount of feeds and water, rabbits can produce 6 times the amount of meat compared to cows.  Rabbits are also prolific breeders which makes it easy to raise them for meat.

D'Bunnychon Review

After a quick Rabbit Meat 101, it was time to try the dishes at D'Bunnychon.  Here are the dishes that we tried out that night:

D'Bunnychon Bunny Boodle
This is the Bunny  Boodle that is perfect for a group of 4-6 people.  It is a perfect sampler for all D'Bunnychon specialties.

D'Bunnychon Bunnychon Value Meal

Fried BunnyChon
D'Bunnychon also has Bunnychon (Roasted Rabbit) value meals.  One variant is the regular roasted rabbit while the other one is the friend Bunnychon.   These meals are priced at 125 pesos each.

Rabbit Lumpia Value Meal at D'Bunnychon

Rabbit Caldereta

Rabbit Bola-Bola or Rabbit Meatballs
Cebu's First Rabbit Restaurant also serves rabbit meat versions of some of our favorites like lumpia, bola-bola, caldereta, and sisig.  You can try rabbit dishes for as low as 55 pesos (lumpia) or 65 pesos (bola-bola).

d'Bunnychon signature sauces
D'Bunnychon also offers different types of sauces as dipping.

Aside from these rabbit dishes, D'Bunnychon also serves some amazing drinks like the Blue Tea that is made of blue ternate leaves.

Overall, it was not as weird as imagined it to be.  If people did not tell me that I was eating rabbit, I would not really have noticed.   Flavor-wise, it was not as strange or as gamey as I expected.  Among their dishes, I enjoyed most the BunnyChon or Roasted Rabbit, sisig, and bola-bola.  I really liked the way they seasoned their food at D'Bunnychon.

I also love their camote and black rice.   For spicy food lovers, their chili sauce is a must.  In the end, I would say that eating at D'Bunnychon changed my views on rabbits.   I still find them cute but now, I also find them delicious. ;)

Cebu Best New Restaurants 2019: Da-In Korean Restaurant

Da-In Korean Restaurant Food Review

The Creative Cuisine Group is easily one of the most formidable restaurant groups in Cebu. Even in their catering business, they are known to be focused on the upper-middle-class market.  So when they opened this new restaurant concept called Da-In Korean Restaurant, I expected a lot of attention to detail.  Indeed, this restaurant is a must-try among Korean barbecue lovers who are more concerned with quality than quantity.

Da-In Korean Restaurant, Creative Cuisine's Newest Restaurant

Over the past few years, Korean culture has somehow invaded the country.  Cebu is one of the favorite destinations of Koreans here in the country so it is not surprising that Korean restaurants would thrive here.  One of the popular Korean restaurant concepts is a Korean barbecue

To be honest, I was pretty overwhelmed when I first ate a Korean barbecue at Pearl many years ago.   I loved the fact you cook your own meat then wrap in unlimited servings of veggies and kimchi.  I was truly blown away.

Then more and more Korean Barbecue concepts opened.  There are unlimited Samgyeopsal restaurants and a few serving a la carte Korean barbecue that allows us to eat offal and premium parts.
The Creative Cuisine Group opens Da-In Korean Restaurant

Finally, the Creative Cuisine Group (CCG) joined the fray.  I was pretty excited when they invited me to lunch. The first question that I asked when I arrived was to know if they have a Korean chef.  Anyone can probably run a Korean Barbecue but I think a Korean chef will still make a big difference especially in higher price ranges.

Apparently, CCG partnered with the Korean owner of Da Won Restaurant in Mandaue to start this venture so diners can expect authentic Korean dishes and flavors.

Da-In Restaurant Initial Impressions

The location is quite familiar to Cebuano foodies because this restaurant was built in what used to be Brique in Salinas Drive, Lahug, Cebu City.  Parking will be on the Chika-an side and there will be many parking spaces in that area.
Cebu's newest Korean Barbecue Place: Da-In Korean Restaurant

They have not really changed much the old Brique layout and they managed to put quite a few Korean Barbecue table settings on the ground floor.  On the second floor, they made a few private dining areas. Even at lunchtime, I felt a more upscale and elegant vibe compared to the typical Korean barbecue places.
Interior of Da-In Korean Restaurant

Checking on the menu,  they have a lot of authentic Korean dishes along with some premium cuts of meat for grilling. The budget for 2 people here would be 1,000 pesos upwards.

Dining at Da-In

During our lunch, we were served with Beef Ribs, Steamed Egg, Bibimbap, Onion Bulgogi, and a host of side dishes.  Typically when you eat here, you are going to order 2 servings of meat.  For that order, you get 7 Korean side dishes like kimchi, potato chips, fish cakes, japchae, and Korean pancakes.   You also get to have unlimited visits to the salad bar.

 Beef Bulgogi Bibimbap

Da-In's Onion Bulgogi

Based on what I tasted, the meat cuts were well chosen.  It had good color and the beef that was served to us had excellent marbling.  The attendants were quite awesome in helping us grill our meat perfectly.
Enjoying the best Korean Barbecue in Cebu City

The Korean dishes like the bibimbap and the noodles were "beautiful".  Koreans like color in their food and you can see it on how the food here is presented.  You can see a lot of yellow, red, green, white, and black in the different dishes that are served.  The dishes were not just beautiful to look at but very delicious on the palate.

Kalami Cebu Review

With the abundance of cheap unlimited samgyeopsal places in Cebu, Da-In Korean Restaurant is a great change of pace Korean barbecue place.  At Da-In, you can slow down and truly enjoy the taste, the fragrance, and the beauty of Korean food.  Here, it is not about quantity but a quality that is way higher than the usual but still accessible and affordable to many Cebuanos.

The place is the type of restaurant where you take someone special for a date.  A place where you are transported to a nice restaurant in Seoul or perhaps L.A. where you can enjoy excellent cuts of meat and the best Korean dishes while still being able to have a meaningful conversation.

Da-In Korean Restaurant is really a great place to slow down and savor how wonderful Korean cuisine while having a memorable meal with the special people of your life.

It is not cheap but I am sure you have someone in your life that is worth spending something extra for lunch or dinner.

The song "Give Love On Christmas Day" talks about trying to find a present that is better than anything you get from a store.  At Bo's Coffee, the holidays are all about "Give Love," as coffee lovers can find ways to show love for others in different forms and ways.  The Filipino-owned chain of coffee shops recently launched its holiday campaign, which urges people to spend time with loved ones over through get-togethers, celebrations over a sumptuous feast, and gift-giving. This is truly reflective with Bo's Coffee’s holiday offers, where you can show love and "Give Love" by gifting family members and loved ones with something special this season—like embracing them with the warmth of coffee.

Corned Beef Meal at Nomad's Hub
I spent a big chunk of my day today at one of my favorite co-working spaces in Cebu, Nomad's Hub. One thing I like about this place is that they serve affordable food. Today, I ordered their corned beef meal for dinner.

Affordable Meals at Nomad's Hub

Nomad's Hub Menu

There are actually a lot of good choices here at Nomad's Hub and it is very affordable.  Usually, I get Instant Pancit Canton here because it is only 25 pesos and 35 if you want it with egg.  When I am up for a bigger meal, there are just so many familiar items to choose from.

Local Corned Beef in the Philippines

For today, I decided to have Corned Beef.  I love getting this because it is one of my preferred breakfast items.  The staff here basically heats a whole can of local corned beef which is more than enough for one person.

The meal comes with eggs and it usually sunny side up.  Since I like my eggs scrambled, I normally order an extra egg --for 15 pesos.  I don't need to order drinks since this co-working space offers unlimited servings of coffee and iced tea.

Eating and Working at a Co-working space

Nomad's Hub Co-working Space in Cebu
Co-working spaces are fast becoming a favorite among students, freelancers, and even professionals.  These spaces provide an excellent internet connection, ambient lighting, adequate air-conditioning, napping stations, meeting areas, and food options.  A content creator like me could stay the whole day here to write and edit videos without even having to go out to eat.

While most Co-working Spaces are open 24 hours, Nomad's Hub offers backpacker-type rooms if you need to stay overnight which is perfect for the growing tribe of digital nomads.

It is actually comforting to know that there are a growing number of amazing co-working spaces in Cebu.

Oyster Bay Seafood Restaurant | Best Seafood Restaurant in Mandaue

oyster bay seafood restaurant, best seafood restaurant mandaue

A lot of tourists come to Cebu to enjoy seafood and indeed, Cebu has a lot of excellent seafood restaurants.    One of the best is located in Mandaue City and it is called Oyster Bay Seafood Restaurant.  I visited the place towards the end of the decade and  I had one of the best seafood meals in recent memory there.  This seafood restaurant should be on top of your list should you go hungry in Mandaue.

Oyster Bay Seafood Restaurant, a Great Seafood Place plus More

Oyster Bay is located at Bridges Town Square, Plaridel Street, Mandaue City.  It is not located on the "touristy" side of the city but tourists love it here because it is the best seafood place closest to the Mactan Cebu International Airport.

The restaurant has a chill vibe and I really like the high ceiling.  It has a good amount of tables and a function room that is perfect for special gatherings. Oyster Bay Seafood Restaurant is known for its seafood especially the live seafood and its amazing deal for fresh oysters.

Live crabs at Oyster Bay Restaurant

When I checked the menu, Oyster Bay has a solid line-up of Filipino dishes that will surely make any balikbayan or a Cebuano family have a memorable experience.  You can actually enjoy pochero, bistek, and lechon kawali with their seafood specialties here.  The prices and servings can compete really well with your favorite Filipino restaurants in malls.

There is no reason why you should not consider Oyster Bay Seafood Restaurant on your next special occasion.  It's a restaurant that is a great place with great food and great service.

Dining at Oyster Bay Seafood Restaurant

To end an amazing decade, I had a diet-busting lunch that included crab, oysters, palabok bites, chicken kablam, and unli-rice.  I was pleasantly surprised that the restaurant also offers unlimited servings of rice for only 75.00 pesos.  Another great thing is that the fresh oysters here are in a perpetual buy one take one promo where you can get 18 pieces of good-sized oysters for only 180 pesos. That's just oysterrific!!!

I also had the baked oysters with cheese and garlic.  They were so good that no wonder, the waiters said that it was their favorite too.  To this day, I was quite surprised that I finished over 20 oysters in one sitting plus a whole lot more.

chicken kablam, fried chicken skin in skewers

Palabok Bites, pancit palabok in wonton

Oyster Bay Seafood Restaurant is not just an awesome seafood place but they also offer some interesting dishes like chicken kablam and palabok bites.  The chicken kablam is basically crispy fried chicken skin on a skewer.  While the palabok bites, put my favorite noodles in a wonton wrap.

It is not surprising that I like both dishes a lot.  Who would not like some fried chicken skin dipped in spicy vinegar?  It will surely make you eat more rice.  The crispy wonton wrap just transformed a good noodle dish into a great appetizer.

Black Pepper Crab at Oyster Bay Seafood Restaurant
Since I was dining one of the best seafood restaurants in Cebu, my main event was a Black Pepper Crab.  Just like any live seafood restaurant, at Oyster Bay Seafood Restaurant you can pick a live crab, fish, shrimps, and shells and have their expert cooks make seafood to your liking.   You can also ask the waiters for some dish recommendations.

What can I say about the crabs?  No words! All I can say is that I had a big plate full of shells because I finished it all.  Delicious!!  It is not easy to finish a whole crab on your own along with a host of other dishes.

In the end, I consider my meal here as one of the best of 2019.  It was filling. It was great. But, it actually made me want some more.  The dishes that I tried was so good that it made me want to check out their other dishes.  Maybe next time, I would have some pochero, prawns, and I still probably going to have some oysters.  I will definitely be back.

How about you guys, have you dined at Oyster Bay Seafood Restaurant?

Cebu City assured of steady Pork Supply with the Help of Gensan and South Cotabato Hog Raisers

Ramil Lim, president of president of the South Cotabato Swine Producers Association (SOCOSPA)
In these challenging times, it is important that Cebu will have a steady supply of food, especially meat.  As pork prices have been increasing, the local meat shops can now breathe a sigh of relief as hog raisers of South Cotabato have resumed shipping pork to Cebu,

Hog raisers in General Santos City and South Cotabato said they are ready to resume supplying a good quality, affordable and steady supply of pork meat for Cebu City after Mayor Edgardo Labella lifted the ban on entry of hogs and pork products here following an African Swine Fever infection in some parts of Mindanao in February.

“We are happy to resume supplying Cebu City which we have been doing for the last 30 years,” said Ramil Lim, president of the South Cotabato Swine Producers Association (SOCOSPA).

Lim likewise thanked Mayor Labella for lifting the ASF-related ban on hogs and pork products in Cebu City. Mayor Labella issued an executive order lifting the ban on April 28.
“We hope other cities and provinces in the Visayas will follow suit,” Lim said.

The SOCOSPA president also thanked the mayors of Tacloban City and other towns in Southern Leyte for allowing the entry of live hogs in the said nearby island. SOCOSPA hog raisers are shipping an average of eight to ten 20-foot container vans of frozen pig carcasses to Cebu City every week before the ban was imposed in February this year.  Each container van is loaded with 12 tons of headless pig carcasses.  General Santos City and South Cotabato were recently declared ASF-free by the Department of Agriculture.

All shipped pork products are also inspected and certified by the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) before they are loaded into refrigerated vans bound for Cebu and other destinations.
ASF Free Certificate of SOCOSPA meat

SOCOSPA livestock raisers, which primarily are from General Santos City and South Cotabato, are the largest hog producers in Mindanao.  Both have a combined population of at least 45,000 sows and are capable of producing at least 50,000 hogs every month.  At least 60 percent of SOCOSPA hog production is shipped to the Visayas, particularly in Cebu City.

DAR Secretary William Dar earlier said some 1,700 metric tons of pork meat is immediately available from General Santos and Davao City to also meet a possible supply problem in Metro Manila.  Cebu City meat shop owners have been complaining of a low supply of headless pork carcasses.

The price of frozen pork carcass has reportedly gone up to P175 per kilo, prompting them to buy from backyard owners, which is still not enough to meet local demands here.  Backyard hogs have low recovery rates which, according to meat shop owners, drive prices of meat products to go up.

A kilo of prime pork belly is now reportedly selling at P300 per kilo at meat shops here in Cebu.  Frozen pig carcasses from General Santos City are priced at P135 to P140 a kilo when landed in Cebu before the ASF-related ban was imposed.

Is your immune system healthy enough amid the pandemic?

Pasig City, Philippines—May 26, 2020The current Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, highlighted the importance of how our immune system, the body’s ability to fight viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens can help us fight diseases. But what does it really do? And why is it important to keep your immune system functioning optimally amid the health crisis?

An army against pathogens

Our immune system is made up of a very complex network of cells and protein that defends our body against infections. Among its main components include the white blood cells, antibodies, complement cascade, lymphatic system, spleen, thymus, and the bone marrow—all serving as our body’s guardians against pathogens.

According to a study by Clark WR, entitled “In Defense of Self: How the Immune System Really Works in Managing Health and Disease,”[1] our immune system has three types of responses—innate and adaptive. Innate response refers to the natural barriers we have against disease-causing pathogens. For instance, our skin acts as a barrier to block germs from entering the body. In fact, the acidity of the skin helps as the first line of defense by destroying certain pathogens that land on the skin surface.

Then, there is the adaptive response, which develops when we are exposed to diseases or when we are immunized against them either through vaccines or antibodies we form. Vaccination safely helps our immune system to fight these pathogens and prevent diseases like polio and measles. Unfortunately, there is still no available vaccine yet for COVID 19 so, we need to continue looking after our physical and mental health to aid our immune system.

Keeping the immune system healthy

The World Health Organization (WHO)[2] recommends observing the basic protective measure against COVID-19, which include frequent washing of hands with soap and water or sanitizing with alcohol; maintaining physical distancing, avoiding touching the eyes, nose, and mouth; and covering your nose and mouth with a bent elbow or tissue when coughing or sneezing and wearing face masks and gloves.

On the other hand, the WHO also says that while we are advised to stay at home, we need to prioritize our health and wellness to help our immune system function well. [3] To maintain a healthy lifestyle, we need to eat a healthy and nutritious diet. It also pays to limit alcohol consumption and avoid sugary drinks. Smoking should also be avoided as it increases the risk of developing severe diseases if infected with COVID-19. Exercise, on the other hand, must be done regularly for at least 30 minutes for adults and one hour a day for children.

And, of course, looking after our mental health is also equally important. It is normal to feel stressed, confused, and scared during a crisis. Talking to people you trust, listening to music, reading, or meditating are just some of the things we can do to relieve stress and anxiety, says the WHO.

Helping it more

While we are born with the kind of immune system we have, taking steps to help it perform at optimum levels is a preventive way of keeping safe and protected. To keep its optimal health, it pays to take vitamins and food supplements—this mindset is what Santé has been promoting to help everyone live more and do more in life.

With Santé Barley as its flagship product, the company has developed a comprehensive selection of everyday barley-based products. Barley grass has been a subject of interest in the scientific community because of its potential source of nutritional substances. According to a study published in Czech J. Food Sci., barley contains significant amounts of dietary fiber, protein, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. It includes beta-glucans, superoxide dismutase content, and Vitamin C.[4]

Beta-glucans are naturally occurring polysaccharides found in the cell walls of bacteria, fungi, yeast, algae, lichens, and plants, such as oats and barley. An article published in Madicina (Kaunas) said that beta-glucans are taken as herbal medicines to prevent and treat HIV, cancer, and diabetes, as well as to lower cholesterol.[5] They are also used to enable an immune system weakened by conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome, physical and emotional stress, or treatments like radiation or chemotherapy respond better.

Another notable nutritional value of barley grass is its superoxide dismutase content. It is an enzyme that acts as an antioxidant, providing cellular defense against reactive oxygen species (ROS), which, according to a study by Hughes DA, causes many types of cell damage.

Barley also contains Vitamin C, ranging from 19.4 548.0 mg/100g. Generally, the content varies depending on the growth stage, processing technology, and various cultivars.[6]

All these nutrients are found in Santé Barley, as well as in other Santé products made, specifically, with organic pure barley from farms, as certified by BioGro, New Zealand’s leading organic certification agency.

With the emergence of new microbes, our immune systems will be our primary defense in the first 48-72 hours of attack by these vicious and unfamiliar predators.[7] By following these simple steps, we can prevent contracting diseases, especially amid the current pandemic.

2020 Ford Everest Sport

Ford Philippines recently launched its newest SUV, the Ford Everest Sport.  Priced at 1,868,000, this mean-looking Sports Utility Vehicle will be a formidable contender in the Under 2 Million SUV Category.  This amazing mid-size SUV is my dream car for food trips.

5 Reasons Why I Choose the Ford Everest Sport

1.  Looks
When buying cars at this price range, looks will surely matter.  I want my car to stand out especially when I will be on out of town trips.  Well, the New Ford Everest Sport is definitely a stunner with unique black body exterior accents such as a new mesh grille design, an embossed EVEREST hood badge at the front, gloss black painted wheels and exterior mirrors on the side, black tailgate applique in the rear and a ‘SPORT’ decal on the liftgate. It also has LED projector headlamps, daytime running lights, and 20-inch alloy wheels.

If you want this to be more unique, you can pick the Ford Everest Sport-exclusive Deep Blue Crystal Color.  The other color options are Absolute Black, Aluminum Metallic, and Arctic White.

2. Under the Hood
This SUV is powered by a 2.0L Turbo Diesel Engine which offers 180PS of power and 420Nm of torque and is matched with Ford’s latest 10-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift™ – helping to deliver better acceleration, fuel efficiency, and smoothness across on-road and off-road environments.  With this, I can visit mountainous places like Busay with ease. I can also go for long drives to Moalboal without worrying much about gas.

3.  Interior
The interior is as important as the exterior as we spend more time inside the car than just looking at it.  Ford is not making any compromises with this one as the new Everest Sport features a unique blue stitching accent around the steering wheel, dashboard, seats, center, console, and door trims delivering a sporty premium feel. Adding value to the Sport is a standard leather seat with 8-way power driver seat function, smart keyless entry with push-button start, and a power liftgate with hands-free function.  I am pretty sure that whether I am the passenger or the driver, I want to ride this car every single day.

4. Safety Features
Safety is always a priority when it comes to food trips and this car checks all the boxes.  It has Cruise Control, Electronic Power-Assist Steering (EPAS), Rear View Camera, Rear Parking Sensors, and Electronic Stability Control with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), and Roll Stability Control. Adding to all these are seven (7) airbags including side, curtain, and driver knee airbags.  The Ford Everest has a complete list of passive and active safety features.

5.  Fantastic Add-Ons
For entertainment and connectivity, it is equipped with an 8-inch LCD Touchscreen, Sync® 3 with Apple Carplay and Android Auto-Connectivity, two USB ports, and 10 speakers.  These assure that every food trip will be fun, memorable, and hassle-free as I can charge all my gadgets while listening to my favorite playlist.

At 1,868,000, the Ford Everest Sport is totally worth it and I am looking forward to taking this awesome SUV to an out of town food trip.  Watch out for that on my Youtube channel very soon.

Gains in 2019 keep Pilipinas Shell strong in 2020

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation (Shell) had reassuring news for its shareholders during its Annual General Meeting held virtually on June 16.

The company closed the year 2019 strong with P5.6 billion in net income, a hefty 11 percent increase from P5.1 billion in 2018.

“We started 2020 with a very healthy balance sheet, which puts us in a better position to handle the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID -19) situation,” says Pilipinas Shell CEO and Country Chairman Cesar Romero.

“I am proud that Pilipinas Shell has continued to provide vital energy products to our customers and communities, even during the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) period,” he adds.

Romero is optimistic that with Pilipinas Shell’s sufficient retained earnings and reasonable gearing level, the company can maintain financial resilience and survive the drastic reduction in domestic demand as a series of quarantines were implemented to help the country stem the COVID-19 pandemic since March.

“Now, more than ever, Pilipinas Shell draws from its 106 years of experience doing business in the Philippines. We’ve had our share of regional and global economic crises, socio-political disruptions, and industrial shifts. We know what levers we can pull in downturns, even dramatic ones like this, and we are in control. We have the will, people, and resources, as well as our core values to get us through this particularly challenging time,” he says.

In January, for instance, Shell’s supply chain and distribution network was affected when ashfall from the Taal Volcano eruption caused the cancellation of flights, displaced residents, and disrupted the movement of people, goods, and services to and from the company’s Refinery in Batangas.

Pilipinas Shell also had to deal with plummeting global oil prices resulting from the price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia in the first quarter of the year. Pilipinas Shell Chairman of the Board Min Yih Tan, who was also virtually present during the meeting, expressed confidence that the company’s recovery strategies are in place.

“We are in a robust position not only to deal with market volatility but also to support the country’s growth as it enters the ‘new normal’, he said.

Romero says that even as Pilipinas Shell enhances its cash conservation measures by generating revenues, reducing cost, capex, and manage working capital, the company continues to fulfill its role as the country’s partner in nation-building.

“We have reached more than half a million Filipinos through our COVID-19 response activities,” he says.

Pilipinas Shell provided free fuel to 23 key hospitals around the country, as well as fuel subsidies for hospital shuttle services and a fuel discount program for frontliners.

Under Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc.’s (PSFI) Para sa Bayani program, several initiatives are being implemented. Ani Para sa Bayani, which bridges farmers to kitchens and delivers food to frontliners, served almost 500,000 meals to Filipino modern-day heroes nationwide. Under Proteksyon Para sa Bayani, PSFI tapped various sectors to source and create over 8,000 PPE sets for everyday frontliners, including deliverymen and other local partners. Tulong Para sa Bayani ensured that almost 12,000 households in Shell communities received relief packs and essential goods during the ECQ.

“While we are seeing initial signs of economic recovery, it is not clear how long it will take the country to bounce back, and in what shape or form the new normal will be like. What is clear, though, is that we must show leadership and take early and decisive action to stay resilient as a company,” says Romero.
